PACKARD BELL multiplayer setup.....HELP!!!!

by Ron Mill » Sun, 20 Aug 1995 04:00:00

My friend owns a Packard Bell and he just can not get the
modem to initialize upon answering or dialing.  We have used
both of the intel modem settings for intel 9600 and 14.4 provided
with Nascar and both refuse to work....though his manual says
that his modem type compatibility is either the Hayes Ultra 14.4
or the Intel 14.4 EX.
I set up my own initialization string with seemingly no
problem on my unit because the manual was very thorough about
what to use in the init string to disable data compression and
error control but his manual for the packard seems to have missed
including what we should use for these two settings in his
Packard init string.  Does anyone have a working init string
for the Packard for Nascar?

PS It is only with Nascar we have this initialization problem
with his modem......we connect with a simple ATZ with Descent
and no problem also connecting with Doom.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated for we are really anxious
to get a modem game up.....Send mail if possible and/or post
for others so other packard users might find it useful.

Tnx
Ron

Ah, yes, I've got a Packard Bell to.  It also has a "Hayes Compatible"
14400 modem.  I've never tried this init string with NASCAR (I don't have it)
or IndyCar (haven't found a modem player yet), but I have tried it out by
calling bbs'.  It connects the way NASCAR needs.

AT&FM0%C0\N0S28=128

AT&F resets the modem,  M0 turns off the internal speaker (remove if it
doesn't bother you),  %C0 disables data compression,  \N0 disables error
correction, and S28=128 forces a 9600 baud connection only.  Use ATA as your
answer string.  You may also need to add a ^M after them, but it should
work without them.

... Cross ball points with coat hangers so they multiply.
