Packard Bell Sound Card Problem

by Shannon Ki » Sat, 12 Oct 1996 04:00:00

I recently upgraded to a Packard Bell 133 and i cannot get the sound to work
on Nascar1. The Midi works but if i try to autodetect the card the computer
locks up and if i manually insert the numbers from my SET=BLASTER line it
locks up when trying to test the sound. If i try a card it plays this
scratchy noise.
Anyone know what i need to do? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I need this to work so i can try Nascar2!!!!!!

We need a little more information.... What soundcard do you have?  What
have you set up for its IRQ & DMA?  Do you have problems with other
games?

Also you might want to check out the following URL:

By the way folks, the above URL was brought to you via the AutoSim --

Okay, with these shameless plugs out of the way we can go back to your
normal newsgroup postings. ;-)

I have found that configuring the sound in Windows95 causes problems with
the game. If that's what you are doing go to ms-dos mode and the autodetect
should work fine. make sure any shortcuts you have though reflect the ms-dos
settings and not custom settings.

Hope this helps

You don't say how much memory you have.

If it's only 8Mb then I think you can forget it. Most PB machines use
the MWAVE soundcard/modem card and for some reason it only
runs sound in GP2 with 16Mb, sorry.

If your runnin w95 reboot, hit f8 select command prompt only then it
should auto detect just fine.

  I have PB P75 8Mb and the soundcard/modem and gp2 runs
sound just fine.

He was just giving the guy some good advice.  If the computer isn't that
old he should return it for a better one.  Preferably something with a
Creative Labs card if he can't get the clone cards to work.  Packard
Bells are crap.  Few people who have had or worked on one would argue
against that fact.  It shouldn't be hard to find something better since
any recognizable brand is.  And remember we are talking about running
sims here, not exactly the forte of PBs.

<snip> Maybe not go this far. Unless it is brand new. Then return it.

Not with the factory sound card. It emulates a SB 8-bit mono when not
in Windows. Maybe. If you're real lucky. Their preipherals are always
third rate. Look for it to say Soundblaster 16 on the box when buying
a new pc. Anything less is a MAJOR waste of time. 'compatible' means
you might get lucky and get 2/3 of sound based software to work with
it...

I won't. They are NOT upgradeable in basic hardware easily in any manner.
For memory, you have to buy all new memory. To provide 8m of ram they
supply 4 2m sims! How about leaving a free spot to add memory, hm? And
they usually only have 2 or 3 slots. Lesee, sound card, video card....
oops out of slots. No acm card, no video capture... Good for one thing.
Buy it and use it. Don't expect it to perform very well however. And
don't bother calling tech support.
