gpl server requirements

Hi,

Trying to find out information on the server requirements for hosting
permanent GPL servers, information on their stability would also be good.
Trying to get some GSP's here in the UK interested in putting some servers
up.

If anyone has any info on what server spec is required for ONE server, and
the bandwidth requirements or know where that information is available I'd
be very grateful.

Cheers

For bandwidth requirements see: http://www.xs4all.nl/~westrab/gplol.htm

PC specs should be fairly minimal, eg some people have set up servers with
Pentium 200s, 32Mb Ram (more required if server replays desired), and 2D video
(can't run tracks that don't support software mode though).

The server itself can be a machine as cheap as a 300mhz 128mb RAM  system.
When you run in dedicated server mode, the graphics card doesn't matter as
much.  The only downside is that some tracks won't load without a 3D card, even
for the server.  The bandwith should be at least cable modem capacity(1.5
Mbit?).  Thet may allow you to host about 8-9 cars.  To host a full field, you
really need a LAN connection.  Hope that helps.

I have used as slow as a Pentium 120MHz machine with 48MB ram. It
worked great with a full field of 19 drivers.

Eldred, have you looked here?

http://www.horbra.de/winmip/SoftwareFix.htm

I have used these fixes and I have only one track that will not run in
software mode. I think it is a fluke that the one track won't work.

I'd never seen that site before - thanks.  It doesn't matter at home, since I
have a Voodoo5 card, but my servers at work only have a Voodoo2, which didn't
work with some tracks(GPLEA, mostly)
