Nascar 3 -Another Wheel Question

by Jack » Fri, 24 Sep 1999 04:00:00

I too am now considering getting a FF Wheel and would like
to know if I can get one for under $100.  Also are there any
with pedals that are "usable"?  The pedals with my Nascar Sprint
were definitely not, so I use the flappers on the wheel. Also, can you
brake quickly enough with pedals? When I tried the pedals with my
Sprint, it was hard to be quick enough going from gas to brake.
Especially when you need to make those quick "relflex" brakes.

Ahem... Why not try left foot=break, right foot=gas?

Anyway, I've only owned and used one FF setup and that's my current MS
Sidewinder FF Wheel. Very nice pedals. Can't comment on other brands.

Nascar 3 -Another Wheel Question

I just picked up the Saitek R4 FF at compusa they have discounted from $180
to $120 so far I like everything about it. It is very accurate and the pedal
base is nice and wide. I have heard some complaints online about the action
of the pedals but I think they are great. You can adjust the tension on both
pedals. I have used the force feedback in GPL and nascar3 and they both work
very well. Since I have never had a FF wheel before I can't compare it to
anything else. The wheel does seem very well built though. The way it
attaches to your desk also is very nice.

I have a Grand Prix Thrustmaster (Paddles Only) that I upgraded from. It
will take some getting used to not wanting to grab for the paddles the FF
has them also. Just remember gas with the right foot, brake with the left
foot. I keep forgetting!

Just my 2 cents

Oh yeah, just remembered another thing. The MS SW FF Wheel is gear
driven, which is said to give a notchy or grinding feel when you pull
the wheel. This has never bothered me before (GPL, TOCA 1 & 2, CMR,
Viper, SCGT, Powerslide) but with N3 you tend to "pull the wheel left
for extended periods of time", if you know what I mean     :-) And now
this slight grinding feeling has started to bother me.

So now I cast my greedy eyes at a Logitech SW FF we have at work. I
think I'll have to borrow it and give it a try.

You won't want to give the Logitech back!

If I'm not mistaken, the Saitek uses the Microsoft FF engine/electronics...
