N3 and Thrustmaster Wheel Problems

I am new to racing, having used an old microsoft joystick, and just
bought a new guillemot thrustmaster wheel.  After two or three calls to
customer service, I got it to install under win 98 (their documentation
is s**t). N3 recognized it, but now, when I try to restart the game, I
get NO response.  Have installed and reinstalled the wheel, and N3 a
couple of times.  Any clues as to what is wrong?

 I am using Microsoft's sidewinder and had to update my DirectX 7 to 7A.
