FF wheels with long pedal travel?

by Graeme Nas » Sun, 11 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Sorry for yet another "which FF wheel" post... but I'd like to know if
there is a good FF wheel out there which has a long-ish pedal travel
comparable to that of a TM NASCAR Pro / F1?

I'd like to get the TM FF wheel but everyone says it's crap...?
I think the Logitech has a tiny pedal travel..? so what about the ACT
Labs or the MS?

FF wheels with long pedal travel?

by Peter Prochazk » Sun, 11 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I have the same question: Are there any FFwheels with pedals comparable to
the pedals of the TM NascarPro / F1 except the TM FF ?
Also is it possible to use my TM F1 pedals with a FF wheel ? If so, which
FF wheel should I buy ? Should it work via USB or anything else ?
Are there any good FF wheels with a gear shifting stick except the TM FF ?

I know, a lot of questions, but I don't know anythig about FF wheels, and I
MUST TRY GPL FF NOW !!! :-)

FF wheels with long pedal travel?

by JVizoso.freeserve.co.u » Sun, 11 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I've the act labs wheel , pedals..the pedals are short throw ...too...the
best bet at the moment seems to be to get the usb version of the act labs ff
wheel and then use either ch pedals (split axis)..or wire up some old
thrusty pedal using the plug and wires kindly supplied by act labs...you can
'hang' the wheel off the usb and use the soundcard gameport to access the
pedals....

I wish some ff manufacturer would make some
pedals that wouldn't try to rip the wheels off!!

FF wheels with long pedal travel?

Graeme,

From my understanding you can get a Logitech Force Feedback wheel which
connects via USB or Serial and can then hook your TM NASCAR Pro pedals up
via your joystick port and then you have the best of both worlds <VBG>

At this point that looks like my plan of action as well.

I've just bought a Logitech Formula Force wheel, and I desperately need to
get my Thrustmaster pedals to work with it!
Any clues?

FF wheels with long pedal travel?

Nascar Pro has 5cm travel in throttlepedal and something like 3cm in brake.

Microsoft FF Wheel has both 5cm...and it's goooood (I had Nascar Pro
earlier) :)

I did PB's in Silverstone and Rouen with my MS FF and yes, with FF turned on
;)

btw. default values for FF forces are ***to MS FF. I use very responsive
setups...much better..

Here's good FF setups:

MSFF panelsetup:

Centering force = none
Force feedback level = low (If you set this to high, you'll need your
neighbors to help you turn the wheel...)

Core.ini setup:

[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1                         ; Use FF if device has it
force_feedback_damping = 40.000000  ; force feedback damping coefficient
force_feedback_latency = 0.00001          ; force feedback latency (secs)
max_steering_torque = 025.000000        ; steering torque in N*in giving max
device force

FF wheels with long pedal travel?

by Roland Ehnstr? » Sun, 11 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Well, I got it working now! :)
The problem was that my new Logitech wheel was assigned as unit 1, and the
Thrustmaster wheel and pedals were unit 2. For some reason this ment that
Windows could not recognize the Thrustmaster unit. After a few tries I
managed to get the Thrustmaster unit as #1 and the Logitech one as #2, and
then, finally, it worked! :)
With the Thrustmaster pedals, this wheel is GREAT!!! :-D

My trouble exactly. Do you have the USB version? If so I think you need
a PDPI gamecard for the combination to work.

Guess I'll have to go buy one... unless someone has a solution?

At least with the Logitech FF in USB mode, you can have both it and your
TM NascarPro installed in windows and the same time and GPL will let you
use the Logitech as the wheel and your TM NascarPro pedals as the pedals.

The best of both worlds and I was running like this with my T2 for a while,
but now that I'm adjusted to the Logitech wheel, I went even farther and
wired the T2 pedals into the Logitech as it's pedals, and now I have a
great combo of FF wheel and pedals.

FF wheels with long pedal travel?

One other option that might help decide your choice is that if you
already have a wheel whose pedals you like you can probably wire
them into whichever FF wheel you buy.

Case in point, I had a 4 year old Thrustmaster T2 whose pedals I loved.

I bought a Logitech Wingman FF a couple of weeks ago, didn't like the
Wingman pedals. Since the Logitech FF is USB, I was able to use the Logitech
FF as the wheel and leave my T2 plugged into my joystick port and use the T2
pedals in GPL since it recognizes all the joystick axis from DirectInput.
The USB and joystick port work together in Windows for games that have
enough smarts to see both controllers (GPL is one of these smart games)

I went even farther and just wired my T2 pedals into the Logitech FF wheel,
and now I have a great combo with great wheel + FF + great pedals.

So if you have already some decent pedals on another wheel there is a good
chance you can keep using them with whichever FF wheel you purchase.

Papy is responsible for the sale of my LogitechFF which I purchased
3 weeks ago in preparation for the GPL 1.1 patch!!

All I can say is wooohooo! The FF really adds to my already ***ive
love of GPL, definitely worth upgrading wheels from my old T2.

Great job on the FF Randy and company.

Roland,

Glad you got it working!   If you don't already have it,  I suggest you
purchase the Pro Pedals upgrade for the TM NPro pedal unit.  This way you will
never have to worry about a broken spring again and you will have a pretty
awesome setup for the money spent.  The upgrade costs only about $30 US if I
recall correctly.

I don't have the web address handly but if you are interested in it Im sure I
can dig it up or someone else might be able to post it.

Happy Racing,
Scott
