A new demo of my simulator

by Colin Re » Sat, 02 Feb 2002 18:35:56

Hi all, I've just finished the new demo which can be downloaded from
the dynamics/downloads section of my homepage :-

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Due to request I have implemented fixed cameras, mouse control and
preliminary sound (only engine at the moment).

Please read the readme.txt as there are options that allow the use of
mouse control, are some rendering options.

There are still some problems :-

No controller support yet, I do have it working but I want to tweak it
more and make some configuration screens before releasing to the
public.

I have not yet implemented relaxation lengths for the tires and hence
the wheels rotate when at low speeds.

Still no keyboard configuration, sorry to anyone with non QWERTY
keyboards, you can always use the mouse :-)

Enjoy,
      Colin

Looks very promising.. I actually managed to get myself caught up in one of
those "gotta try this just one more time" things, that sort of implies that
it's already fun to mess around on the track.

One thing I find a bit off the mark is fact that it's just about impossible
to save the car once it starts powersliding. Maybe it's because of the
keyboard input ?? It felt like there was a ton of bricks in the trunks and
when the rearend broke loose there was no way to countersteer and catch the
slide.

Am I wrong here ??

Really nice demo, from both the physics and graphics point of views.
But beware: posts asking for a cart sim should not be long in coming :-)

:-) This is good to here.

Yes and no. No, I haven't got any code in there to simulate bricks in
the trunk ;-) but I haven't had time to setup the car properly yet and
so it is very tail heavy, even when not under power if you steer from
left to right and back repeatedly it will start to oversteer which is
something that I have to look at. Also, try the mouse controls, it is
much easier to catch a slide (although still hard!).

Thanks, still much more to do, I really want to get the controller
support in there so that I can really see how it is really handling
and how much I have to work on.

Aaaarrrrrggghhhhh, you're gonna start them off again !!!!

But, we can make our own cars and tracks, right!?!? Get the controller stuff
done!! Get the controller stuff done!!Get the controller stuff done!! :)
Nice piece of work.

Ahh mousecontrol did the trick... can't fool an old GPL driver, yessir I
know how to slide a car ;)
It's still extremely difficult to control probably because I'm not used to
mousecontrol, but the physics feel right.. sorry I cant pinpoint it better
than that.

Now I want you to forget what you was doing, and fix me up a track with some
some jumps.... jumps NOW *lol*
I know it's a serious racing thing, but please make a sideproject for us
wannabe stuncar racers.

Anyone remember Whiplash? That was a fun racing game with great jumps in
it. Wonder if it'll run on todays hardware? If I remember correctly it
was a glide only game?

I've been thinking about this some more, it could be one of the
following things :-

1) The suspension currently moves in a perpendicular line to the body
(yes I know, very lame) and so because 'track camber' is modelled as
soon as you turn and the weight transfers to the outside of the car,
the side force afforded by the -ve static camber is going to reduce.

2) The inertia of the body is too high resulting in unstoppable spins.

3) the setup of the body (CG location, front/rear weight ratio, etc)
are wrong, if someone wants to have a fiddle with these, please feel
free, you can edit the file dataDir/carModel/carSetup.ini with a text
editor.....

As of the moment, 'raceDemo' (really must think of a cool name for it)
is an open book, I do intend for MODs to be easily makeable with the
possibility of an SDK in the future ....

This is kind of embarassing, I've found a HUGE handling affecting bug
that has now been fixed, please wait until the new version later today

Great demo! What's the bug? I haven't noticed it.

Ok, in the 0.12 demo, drive along in 3rd gear at around 6000rpm, then
suddenly let of the gas totally and try to steer, you will get a
massive amount of oversteer and probably crash.

Ever since the first raceDemo I had mistakenly set the engine braking
coefficient to 6.24 which means that at 7000 rpm you get;

(7000 / 60) = 116.66
6.24 * 116.66 = 727.95

727Nm of engine braking torque!!! If the accelerator is not being
pressed then all of this -ve torque is being sent to the driving
wheels and hence producing some seriously -ve slipRatios, hence the
oversteer, all of the lateral grip from the traction circle is being
taken away by these -ve slip ratios.

This braking coefficient has now been reduced to a more sensible 1.0
and that is the setting in raceDemo 0.13.
