Demo of my simulator

by Colin Re » Sat, 10 Nov 2001 13:15:10

After much deliberation I've finally gotten around to preparing a demo
of the race engine that I have been working on. Visitors to
http://www.racesimcentral.net/ will already know something about the engine
but if you've not seen it yet please do drop by.

The demo is located in the dynamics/downloads section it is sized
about ~3mb and requires OpenGL to run.

The control method is keyboard only at this point, I've been doing
some experiments with wheel controllers but have not had time to fully
test / debug the code so the car will be a little hard to drive.

All graphics are taken from the various SCGT mods that are freely
available on the WEB, I believe that I've given proper credit but if
I'm using something of yours and you don't like it please let me know
and I'll change it.

I have to say (no offence to 'racer') this is a STUNNING piece of work. Much
better than the initial release of Racer.  You seem to have got the physics
down a lot more err, 'conservatively' or something - anyhows it's great. Get
some gamport-inputs into it ASAP so we can really see how it goes.  And
hey - keep that jump feature in - I've had some fun with that :D

Hi Colin,

Looks great, and the physics are feeling pretty good. Just a couple of small
problems that meant I couldn't give it a proper test.

I get black squares around the rear light effects (transparency not working)
which occluded my view (I'm running on a Voodoo3). I'll try it on my GF2
machine when I get to work.

The second thing is the choice of controls seems a little odd. The usual
thing for driving games with keyboard control is to use cursor keys for
left/right/brake/accelerate. I always find using letter keys a little
awkward (but that could just be me :)

But besides that, it's looking really good. Keep up the good work!

In case anybody else experiences this, I got around the problem by changing
the dir for rear lights in the SpecTest.ini file.

Again, nice work Colin, the car drives really well (even with the keyboard)
and the Rigid body stuff is very solid. You get really nice collisions and
jumps.

No offence taken. :)
Indeed, the demo is a VERY fine piece of work and should definitely be
checked out. Great collisions, terrific graphics and great tire
physics! ;-)

I'll keep it short... have some catching up to do! :)

Man, those driving key choices are killing those of us with German
keyboards!

Would it make sense for the two teams (Racer and, err, this new one) to
collaborate at all?

Hi Doug

Thats not the point behind these projects, its about learning and doing. :O)

I'm beginning to see the advantage of having several free car
simulations around on the "market". 8-)

Go Ruud go!

hoover

PS: I could not find any screenshots on the page, and will there be
a linux version?

Go to the gallery section on his page, there are screenshots there.
Awesome!

Only in sharing knowledge. And perhaps tracks & cars though (but
Colin's sim uses VRL, that's SCGT, so it's easy enough).

If it would be otherwise, we'd probably be a commercial team and then
suddenly it would be 'the AI sucks!' ;-)

Jeez! :) Back to working on the collisions, hehe.
Anybody got a second-hand cloning machine to get rid of? ;-)

Ah, yes, on Racer's page. ;p
It's an SCGT track, and an SCGT car; looks very beautiful. Nothing
like Racer v0.1 upto v0.4 something.

It's worth downloading...

Awesome!

I had the black square problem aswell on my Win2000 server with Matrox
G450 DH....just FYI.

The viewing system is a bit weird, I couldn't get a nice view to test
the physics the way I wanted. I did reach 2000+ Mph though, when I
flipped over the wall and went into a free fall... :-D

The graphics are great, and the car seems to behave as it should. For
sure something to follow with interest.

NEET-O!!!  Cool stuff.  If only the camera could follow... I would have
gotten a better look at the 2 wheel balance stunt spectacular I accidentally
did.  Going really fast, the car realistically jumps over road "steps"
(uneven pavement) and the car rolls over amazingly.  Really cool physics
engine man!  Keep it up.  (I had to apply the specTest.ini patch since I'm
using an ATI Radeon).
