GPL Replays, RAM malfunction?

by Sam Seni » Sun, 01 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Suddenly, after months of play w/no problems, I can't save as much as
a 3 lap race at Spa. At the end of the race, when I try to go back to
the start, I get the "Red Ring" in the upper left corner, and I'm put
back only about 2 laps. I have 128 MB RAM and huge amounts of disc
space. I haven't changed anything. I tried other tracks, and few
competitors, no difference. Resolution not it either. System: 400 mhz,
Monster II, PDPI, 128RAM, TSW. Anyone else have this problem?

check your core.ini, do you still have the replaymememoryoverride= in
there??

Make sure you have the correct memory override lines in your core.ini

[ Replay ]
replayMemoryOverride = x

where x is the number of Kbytes of memory you want your replay buffer
to be.  16384, for example, would be 16Mb of replay memory.

Does it bother the program in any way if I use a round decimal number,
say 32000, instead of <calculate...> 32768?

nope, no difference, just use what you want, you could use 32001 if you
wanted!

Naw, the program won't really care.

just curious: how do I calculate the needed memory subject to the number
of players and the replay-length in minutes?

there's no point, for example:

If you are in training, and you run around doing a perfect lap which you
don't lock a wheel on (which has no smoke - no dust - nothing) that would be
say 400kb

If you were in training, you locked wheels for the first corner (which made
smoke) then you slammed a barrier (which made smoke) that would take up more
memory, because the replay has to contain those added elements, probably for
the same lap perhaps 500kb.

I find that often a replay of five racing laps can be easily beaten in size
by a replay of a huge accident!

Sam,
I bet you just patched the 1.1, before the problems occured.

This replay-length thing was formerly set in another file than in
core.ini.

You have to put it in core.ini on yourself

Problem solved, due to the very patient advice of Wolfgang Preiss.
Many Thanks!   :)
