I just got through playing Gran Tourismo 2 on my dreamcast, by way of using
BLEEMCAST software, which only cost $5.99, a great bargain . The software
only is made for running GT2, but that is pretty much the only old
playstation game that I still play anymore. The software works flawlessly so
far. Bleem cures about 80% of the visual flaws in GT2, in my rough
estimation. It's not GT3 by any means, but the visuals are very good
nonetheless. I compared the two games side by side running on my PS2 and my
dreamcast running Bleemcast, and the differences are blatantly obvious.
There is virtually no pixelation at all, as the scenery and cars are nicely
antialiased, and the jaggies are also banished to a somewhat lesser degree,
about to the level you will find jaggies in most PC racing sims at 640X480
without antialiasing. Probably the worst remaining visual flaw is that the
scenery bounces and twitches somewhat. The car models are what appear most
improved. It is hard to believe that these are the same cars that are
rendered from the same exact 3d models that the playstation renders. The
cars exhibit almost no jaggies up close, except around window frames, for
some reason. Otherwise, the car models appear to be made up of far more
polygons than they are. Strangely, the cars become better looking and less
jaggied the closer that they get to the virtual camera. They are about as
nice looking as the cars in most modern PC sims, when viewed up close. In
fact the game as a whole looks as good as most native Dreamcast racing
games, albeit the scenery is not quite as good, but the cars look better
than most, and the car animations and physics are better than all Dreamcast
racers but Ferrari F355 Challenge. Again, this software is a great bargain
if you like GT2.
About the only thing that I don't like so far is that the Dreamcast
controller is not nearly as smooth as the playstation Dual Shock analog
controller. Consequently , it is much harder to precisely control your
vehicle, without swaying back and forth all over the road, and
overcorrecting much of the time. However, you can apparently use Playstation
controllers with a Bleempod adapter, as well as your old memory cards, which
will allow you to access your old stable of cars and modifications and
accumulated licenses and money.
