Looooong load times in GPL

by jweh.. » Sat, 24 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Since I've only been running GPL for less than a week now, I might have
missed this discussion, so my applologies if this is old data.

When I start GPL, the first screen takes about 1 min (literally 55-60
seconds) before going to the next (Main?) screen (the one with options,
player, etc).  I have version 1.03.

I'm wondering a) is this long? It sure seems way long to me, since
there isn't any drive activity going on during that time.  b) Could it
be related to communication (ie modem) stuff?  I have a DSL line, so
there is always an open connection.  Is there something to modify in
the core.ini?

Thanks as always for help.

Regards,

John Wehman

I had several people who had this problem with a DSL line (I have one but
don't have this problem).  You will have to disable your normal modem, but
it won't affect your online racing at all IIRC.

You will need to add the following to the core.ini  Im about sure.

[ Task ]
disable_modem = 1      ;

I think it's looking for a serial port or direct modem connection or
something.

The fix is to put in a line saying disable_direct_connect or something
in one of the ini files.

Try looking in deja news, if you haven't already.

If you have a modem configured on your system, make sure it's powered
on before you start the game.  Or, if you're never going to use GPL's
modem-to-modem multiplayer capability, create a plain text file named
core.ini (using Notepad, for example) in GPL's home diretory (the same
directory that has gpl.exe), and add the following two lines to that
file.

[ Communications ]
disable_modem = 1

This will more than likely fix the problem.
