GPL - reduced online frame rate

by Tony » Sat, 13 Jul 2002 19:42:23

Aarrgghh...
After practicing offline for my weekly online league GPL hit, I find my fps
is around 10. Qual undrivable.
Shut GPL - try again. Same.
Reboot - same.
Try offline - 36 fps. Smooth.
Go back to new tweak (NVHardpage) and set everything to default - 10 fps.
Back to 640 x 480 with lots turned off (from max res) and back to 36 fps so
i could at least race.
Duron 1200 with GF3 ti200 - no probs with everything turned on until this
week. I think the only difference was the nvhardpage tweak but why online
and not offline.
I really appreciate some help on this. Pointers anyone?
TIA
Tony

You got FSAA on?

I can get it to kind of work on line but it chops 15fps on my rate if
I've forgotten to turn it off.

I get this too with my Kyro2, although not as bad.

I can run 1152x864 full detail offline but online I use 1/4 detail on the
slider & 800x600.

I put it down to a cheapy modem combined with a fairly low quality
connection. LAN racing is fine.

This may not be connected to your problem, but since switching
to a new computer with a geforce3 ti500, I now must use a much
lower resolution online than what works offline (even with
similiar amounts of cars around offline). E.g., I can't run
online with more than 1280x1024 but offline 1600x1200 is no
problem.

This was not the case with my old setup (using a vooodoo 5),
so I assumed it was something with the geforce drivers.
(I have seen the same behaviour with much lower online
framerates on another geforce equipped machine at work.)

If there is a way to get the geforce to run as well online
as offline I want to know about it :-)

Did you check if your modem or network card (whatever you use to get
online) does share an IRQ with your videocard?

This would be a problem with any of the Win9x lines of operating systems,
but if it is Windows XP (Home or Pro), it is "stacking" of the IRQs.  That's
one of the different traits of the Windows 2000/Windows XP systems.  I have
six different items on IRQ 11, for instance, without any problem or
conflict.

Check out this Kyro II guide for GPL and VROC if you didn't know it existed
;-)

Oh dear, it was that simple. Yes, the graphics and ethernet cards did
share irq. Moving the net card to another slot seems to have made it
work as it should. (Someone said this is a w9x issue, but the box at
work I noticed the same behaviour on runs w2k, wonder if it still
could be the same problem on that one also?)

Thanks! I'll have a play around & see if anything can be done to improve the
problem.

Zero complaints offline & LAN though, I get 32-35fps at the back of the grid
at 1152x864, although I haven't retried this with the new Ferrari.

I'll give this a go but the (win2k) ACPI put it all through one IRQ anyway.
One of the things I tried was disabling ACPI & running the 'Standard PC'
driver, this gave separate IRQ's but made no difference to GPL so I changed
it back again.

Sorted!!

Useful tip to remember: If you're running gpl on a Kyro2, disable the
latency bars in the vroc 'join/advanced' dialogue box.

Cheers, Malc.

(now running 1152x864 full detail online!)

I don't believe I have FSAA on (definitely not checked in GPL). It was one
of the things I was trying to get to work with the nvidea tweak software.
How can I check it is not on?
Thanks
