F1C, turn down sound of AI cars?

I was revisiting F1 Challenge and remembered how annoying it was to hear
the other cars (half way around th track) like they were just behind me.
  Is there a way to turn them down?  The option doesn't exit in the sim,
so I am guessing it may be in a configuration file or if the AI cars use
separate sound files, maybe those could be processes to be at a lower
volume.  Any advice is appreciated.
