Fairgrounds every month for about $3,000 + tax......info only.

So far, so good... :) Maybe if I was you I'd throw in a DVD-ROM or a
CD-R/W drive as well.. Hell, if money's no object, get 'em both...
With a 6.1 GB HD, what do you want a zip drive for? If you transfer
large stuff from home to office, go for it.. Otherwise, I wouldn't
worry about it.. (personally...)

ISA is very nearly obsolete.. So I wouldn't worry about that too
much.. PCI is the way to go..
Yuch.. You said UO.... I wouldn't bother with UO for a long, long
time..

Sound great. Don't bother with the speakers. Save the $$$$$$$ and go buy
a set of Altec Lansing Cubes with the Subwoofer. only 80 0r 90 bucks and
they Rock. I have them a love them. Get the floor rumbling and my wife
hates them....So that means they do their job.
I'm jealous of your system man.

Oh yeah????????  33.6 ?     56k Flex please. Dont' shell out 4 grand for
a system with yesterday's modem. Demand one with Flash Memory so it can
be upgraded to the new standard whrn it comes out next year. ( I suggest
Zoom, USR is good but overpriced as hell, or maybe a Hayes......it's
expensive too though.  Get an external......(they are always rated
higher than the internal counterparts......and you can take them for
service and keep your system at home with little or no hassle. Plus you
can see the lights on it and know how well its working.......or if it is
working at all.

Hope this helps you.

You can configure the same setup for around $3400.  Probably something
similar with Dell.

What kind of Ram?  Mine would have SDRAM, I would bet Best Buys is EDO
Ram?Also what kind of Motherboard?  I wouldn't think Compaq is in the habit
of including the 440 FX AGP board?

Who makes the 3dfx card, and mine would not be Voodoo, VooDoo is the lesser
of the 3dfx cards.

My 17" monitor would be 1600 x 1200 .25 pitch, the Viewsonic PS.

What is UO?

Mike Fraz

Gateway, Dell & More (Help)

The price SUCKS.  I work at Best Buy in the Computers and Home Office
dept.  We have a Compaq pII 300mhz with DVD, 64 megs RAM, 7gig (I
THINK) HD, 3dfx card, 17 inch monitor for 3650 bucks.  Add in the
price of a Diamond MONSTER (not Stealth, the monster is faster) which
is 199 and it comes to 1850.  Thats a savings of 150 bucks.  Check
Best Buy because we are also getting a 300 by HP (The Hewlett Packard
Pavillion 8000 series PCs are fantastic) and an IBM 300.  Not only
THAT, but you can get an HP 266  with 48megs RAM (no DVD) for 2699
right now, but as soon as the 300 comes in it should drop to 2299 or
2399...check it out.

440LX is the chipset that supports AGP...

Actually, they're both called "Voodoo".

"Voodoo Graphics" is the faster one, and it's 3D-only.  You have to have a
standard 2-D card as well.
Manufacturers/brand names:
    Diamond "Monster 3D",
    Orchid "Righteous 3D",
    Canopus "Pure 3D"

"Voodoo Rush" is the newer one, which is used in combination 2D/3D
cards.  It's not as fast as the original "Voodoo Graphics" chipset in some
situations (GLQuake is 5-9fps slower).  3Dfx is working on new drivers
and BIOS that will address that.
Manufacturers/brand names:
    Hercules "Stingray 128/3D"
    Intergraph "Intense 3D Voodoo"
    Jazz "Adrenaline Rush"

He's right. Out of the box has Disadvantages. Unless you really are going to
use the software they include.
Compaq sucks. Pk Bell is worse still. I have an HP Pavillion and love it
though. Lotsa upgrade room on very reliable so far ( 11 months now ).

USR Sportster X2 56k modem w/fax external
Go with this modem. It has flash memory upgrade in it. It is worth the money
just to reduce the Quake lag.

The G6-300XL has 64MB SDRAM and the AGP motherboard.  Base price $3799, but
that's with a 19" monitor, 8.4GB HD, DVD-ROM dirve, and 56kbps modem  Once you
knock those down to what you're looking at the price drops to about $3300. The
G6-300 seems to meet all your specs too, and its only $3099 (it lacks some of
the "extras" of the XL).  Check it out at
http://www.gateway.com/frameset.asp?s=enthus&a=gseries

Well, AGP really hasn't proven itself, but get it anyway. The next
incarnationg of AGP will be a lot better.  P2-300 might be overkill, since
you're still running on a 66MHz system bus.  Get a P2-233 or 266MHz and save
some money and wait until a 100MHz bus becomes a standard.  You probably only
see the difference in benchmarks anyways...

Good...

Good...

Well, i'd get a Diamond Viper 330, but thats just me. Its a lot better in D3D
than the 3Dfx and has killer 2d.  Based on the Riva128 chipset.

What kind?  SCSI (2, 3, UW, etc...) or EIDE (ATA33, etc...)?

24x is overkill, but hell get it.

Good...

AWE64 or AWE64 Gold? Either one would be good.

What kind of speakers? Labtec, Microworks, Altec, etc...

Good, but look into 56k modems.  They may not be great, but they are better
than the current crop of 33.6 modem.  However, I'd wait until the FCA
regulates a standard between 56k technology, if they ever will that is...

Just remember, EIDE drives MUST be the C: drive.  If you have an EIDE and a
SCSI in the same system the EIDE will override anything and become the C:
But i wouldn't use SCSI.  Ultra ATA 33 (an EIDE spec) is suppose to increase
performance a lot, but make sure your hard drive supports it and your
motherboard.

PCI will be the way to go.  Only thing for ISA is modem and possibly a good
joystick game card.  Joystick ports on soundcards (most anyways) are crap.

I don't know about $4000.00 for this system.  Look at all of the components in
a Computer Shopper and see what it would cost for each individual component.

[snip]

Until a standard is forth coming and adopted the decision on a 56K modem
has to be determined by who you will connect to. My ISP uses 56k Flex
which limits my modem selection. If your ISP uses X2 then you are pretty
much stuck with USR/3Com.
