steering really sucks in this game, any suggestion?  i have a ensoniq sound
card and a grand prix 1 wheel

Set the deadzone to 0% (full left)
Set the senstivitiy 3 clicks from the right.
Set the adjust with speed slider to about 60%

Of course turn off braking and steering help.

i tried what you suggested but as soon as i leave pits it takes a hard left
and that's it.  keyboard steering works and wheel works in other games

I have a Logitech FF USB wheel and the steering is superb.

Did you run the calibration routine within SCGT?  (Check the Controls tab).

I use a GP1 wheel just fine in SCGT.
