new computer...baking?? help

by jmor.. » Thu, 21 May 1998 04:00:00

Hi there...

I bought a new computer...a 233mhz 32sdram etc.etc...and I find that
when I turn it on it smells..not as if something is burning...but
almost...its hard to describe...I talked to the computer guy and he
said it was the stuff that they put on the motherboards or whatever
that is baking and that it will eventually wear off....does this make
sense???  it is kinda irritating.  Does anyone know of this??  could
it be the fan or is it probably just what he said?

any help much appreciated so that I can figure out what to do.

oh...and to get on topic...I am planing to buy a flight sim...I've
seen the Janes anthology in hte store and also Janes F15...any
opinions as to which is better???  or is another one better??

thanks

jon

Hmm, I've never noticed a strong smell from a new computer, other than just
the "smell of electronics"
As for flight sims, definitely go with the F-15 by Jane's. But , before you
do, if you can afford it, go pick up a 3dfx pass through video card. F-15
will run much much better on it, and since you have only a 233 p1, going the
more expensive voodoo2 route would probably not gain you a lot. The Canopus
Pure 3d card is an excellent one, check it out at www.canopuscorp.com.
If you cannot go with the 3dfx card, you may want to go with "Anthology", as
you may be dissapointed in the framerates of F-15 without the card.

I second Don's comments.  1st)  Get that mother checked out ASAP!!  Your
board may be frying.  2nd)  F-15 ROCKS!!  If you've got the smack for a 3DFX
card, get it, then get F-15.

Just my $.02 worth,

Is the fan (on power supply) actually running at all.

I noticed the same thing when my computer was new and I was quite concerned
but I thought if its going to fail it might as well be earlier rather than
later. To my delight the smell went away after a couple of weeks. My
suggestion would be to leave the computer on overnight and turn your monitor
off.
