N2 - Cars Smoking?

I was on the last lap of a race and saw smoke ahead. I asumed it was an
accident but I never saw it or the remains of it. When I watched the
replay I saw the #16 car racing around the track and smoke was pouring
out the rear. It was the last lap so I don't know if he was "leaking oil"
or what but he still had power and the caution never came out (last lap).

I don't remember reading about this in the manual. Is this a "feature?"

Yes, this seems to be a neat new feature. I was racing at Rockingham and
saw smoke coming out of Jarrett's car. After about 1-2 laps he pulled in to
the pits. I paused the race and checked the standings. He was listed out
with an engine problem. Pretty cool.

"feature?"

I have seen a few smoking engines, I think it's pretty cool!  It's
not quite as realisitic looking as GP2's blown engines, though.  One
of thing I like much more about N2 than N1 is the caution logic, HUGE
improvement.  I used to get so freaking mad at the number of cautions
I was not involved in (and I was involved in a few!) during races....
humdrum making cation laps forever....

As long as the damaged/smoking car is out of the way and headed for
the pits, no need for caution in my book.

Great job, Papy!

It is a feature of gameplay.  Cars will periodically billow smoke; maybe
they'll drop out after a couple of laps, or maybe they'll continue as
the smoke is harmless- just as in real life.

Oh sure harmless. It's killing the enviroment, they should drap cars
off the track when they start to smoke and fine them heavilty. This is
unacceptable, we should not tolerate this!!!

No kidding about the cautions.  Many times running a full race at Bristol,
contact is quite frequent.  I see many spins, cars hitting the wall and no
caution coming out unless cars are too damaged to move.  Also, I get the
spotter yelling "There's a spin in turn one."  And I'm just waiting for
the caution to come out and it doesn't.  I have to check the replay to see
what went on.  Once had DW spin, hit the wall, then drive into the pits,
all with no caution.  Pretty cool.  Nice change from the 30 or so yellow
at a bristol full race :)

Yep is is cool. I was behind*** Trickle and the car started pluming
smoke out. That was something different indeed.

But will they get black flagged.  Normally when this happens, NASCAR
officials will require that the car be inspected for oil leaks.  They
can return to the track but will continue to be black flagged if it
continues to smoke.  Which brings up another question:  Has anyone
noticed whether the AI are getting BFed for pit road speed violations or
passing under yellow?  This was a problem with NCR1.  The AI would
routinely pass going into the pits and would never receive a black flag.

Yep. When AI cars retire due to mechanical problems, they typically smoke
around the track for a few laps. I would think that NASCAR would black flag
them after the first lap around, but since they don't actually put down
oil, I guess it's OK in the sim.

If you drive like I do, you'd get those 30 yellows in 30 laps of green
flag racing ;)

Haven't seen an AI car pit to serve a flag, but I have been able to beat AI
cars out of the pits, which was nearly impossible in N1. In fact, in N2 I
frequently come out of the pits a car or two ahead of where I went in. My
N1 pit crew seemed to have trouble with lugnuts on every stop.

Are you getting a full fuel load and 4 tires all around?  I'm not sure,
but it seems that the AI guys will sit for all 4 tires and full fuel
even when the situation only calls for a few gallons and maybe right
side ***.  But, I do agree, on a few occassions I've gained 1 or 2
spots when pitting under yellow.  I'm still too cautious coming into the
pits on green stops.  At some tracks it's real hard to judge where the
pit lane starts.  At others I assume it's the 76 Orange Ball...

Yep, 4 tires and fuel. I guess with my online league experience, I've
learned that getting into and out of the pits in a hurry is the easiest way
to make up spots on the track. I spend time during every practice working
on getting in and out of the pits.

As far as I know, the pit speed limit is enforced from the start of the pit
wall to just past the pace car. You have to be careful at Atlanta in N1,
because the pace car sticks out beyond the end of the pit wall, and if you
are close to 55 and floor it at the end of the wall, you will get black
flagged. I haven't checked for this in N2.
