The only way that will happen is if they "lap" at the local drag
strip.
How many seconds are you going to lose cumulatively through poor
cornerning when the straights are short and the corners plentiful?
Hint, a lot more than you will gain on the straights.
As tested out of the box cars like the Clio do not handle badly at
all.

Drive the Subaru Impreza if you can, preferably the WRC, McRae or 22B
versions. I'm not sure how well it is suited to U.S. highway driving
(the 22B in particular is very stiffly sprung) but in terms of bang
for the buck there's little to touch it. I'd love to take it on a
jaunt down Highway 101 through Oregon, that was a nice road in places.
