F1RS: great manual

by The Digital Dude » Sun, 19 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Hey gang.  I just picked up F1RS, and was very impressed by the manual.  It
is very in-depth, concerning car setups, circuit maps and just exactly what
goes on during a Grand Prix weekend.
My first introduction to Formula 1 was F1: Championship Edition for the
Playstation, which is a very good game.  (They could've left out the arcade
mode, though)  Since then, I've been able to watch three races, and am
looking forward to learning more about this exciting sport.
The only problem is, that the game won't run on my 233Mhz, AMD K6 MMX, with
ATI Rage II+ graphics card.  I thought F1RS was supposed to run on Direct3D.
It will be a couple of months before I can get a VooDoo 2.  I hope I don't
have to wait until then to play it!

I was referring to the U.S. manual.  It is much more in depth than the ones
in Playstation games; of course they have limited space.  Anyone got any
help with the Direct3D problem?

I think he is talking about the manual in the UK version, not the US release
which from what I have been reading is absolutely horrid.

Yeah. I got a US copy (I guess...) and the manual sucks.

Not only is it inaccurate, it just doesn't explain much.

Now why would they include different manuals in different versions?

Hmmm...manual in mine seems pretty good.  It's in color, picked this up last
month at EB.  Sorta wasn't supposed to be out then (delayed again) but they
had 'em - and some speculation about this actually being the UK version.
Have no idea which version the software was, installed it and patched it
immediately with the 1.08 IIRC.  I'm assuming the color manual w/British
terms is the UK version.

Heard the US manual is black+white - is it? (the one y'all are complaining
about)  Wonder what they left out.  Did they change the British terms to
American and cut a bunch of stuff?  This one has a section on all the
teams/drivers, pretty good setup info, a bit sparse on the gameplay / menus
in some parts but you can figure it out, and those wonderful British terms
for some things <g>

Your card has to have 4MB onboard, or the game doesn't run.
I think the Rage II only has 2mb...
Buy yourself a cheap Diamond Monster 3D and enjoy!

F1RS will not work on an AMD K6 so your graphics stuff might be fine.
Not unless patch 1.08 changes that, which it does not mention.

I agree, the English manual is a reasonable read.

Why wouldn't it work on one of the most popular processors on today's
market?  If that's true, it seems odd that UbiSoft would allow such a "bug".
I'll have to check out the v 1.08 patch as you mentioned.

>Tony.

Doesn't have anything to do with the K6.  Works beautifully on my K6/166
oc'd to 200, with a 12mb Voodoo 2, both out of the box (not sure which
version it is, I think it's the UK 1.05) and with the 1.08 patch.  Actually,
haven't seen anything NOT run on the K6, unlike the Cyrix I had previously
that had mucho problems with games.  Now, Quake II doesn't run quite as fast
as on a Pentium MMX, let alone a PII, but it does run and run pretty well.
Most other games are equal to a MMX or faster - GP2 for example smoked on
this one vs. any 200 mmx I've seen, although F1RS w/3dfx graphics has sorta
tainted me on GP2 hehe

As stated somewhere else, the video card has to have 4mb of memory and I
don't think the Rage does - might be the problem.  So you might have to wait
for the Voodoo 2 to play it, but rest asssured, it should work fine unless
you have something else causing a problem in your system, but my guess is
the vid card.  Also, even if the Rage has 4mb, it may not support all the
D3D stuff that F1RS needs, some D3D stuff only works right on Rendition,
Riva and 3dfx.

Wrong, it does not work on an AMD K5 processor, K6 is fine.

says...

I have the UK version and I don't think its that good. Details outside of the
game are good (track and general formula 1 info) but instructions for playing
the game are indifferent (remarkably like the game's menu system).

Also there are lots of inacuracies where it describes things differently to
how they actually appear in the game. Very confusing!

I have the UK manual- lots of typos, literally incorrect photos of the
menus, etc etc.

A waste of time. You'll get more from reading around.

Wrong!!!! it has been well documented that f1rs *may* not work on a
AMD *K5* cpu, but it has *no* problems with a *K6*.

I should know cos I've been running f1rs on my k6 200 (clocked to
225) since it first came out last year. I first ran it on my pc with
a 4Mb Mystique in D3d mode, I then bought a 3Dfx card (Maxi gamer)
and now run it in 3Dfx mode. And f1rs has run fine the whole time?

8?)

I have the US version and was looking through the manual last night... it seems
VERY good, and carefully explains what each adjustment to the car does, and even
goes through the physics of why a car will do what it does (ie understeer,
oversteer, ground effect, etc.  There is a section explaining what a Grand Prix
weekend is like, as well as bios of all the drivers.  A very excellend manual.  I
think you were hearing the UK version was horrid.
