Cpu fix keeps the game from running in hyper mode or crashing. It slows
the game down on machines that are two fast for the orginal version.
The updated GPL2004 demo should work...

Also turn off all powersaving features (including the stuff that lets the
CPU slow down if there's little activity) on the laptop.

You might have the problem because of Intel Speedstep. There is a patch but
unfortunately I dont remember its name.
