I think he's comparing AI performance, not 2003 real laptimes. And yes,
there are major changes to the end of the lap.
About the new Magny Cours section at the end of the lap...
Chateau d'eau is now extended further from the previous chicane, and is a
*lot* tighter. The idea is to slow the cars down for a run down to lyce.
The track out of chateau d'eau bears to the left a little before where the
final RL-R chicane used to be, and it runs further down in that direction,
until it is about level with the line of the S/F straight extended back.
Here is a relatively tight right hander, called lyce, which exits on a line
which would run just to the left of the S/F straight, parallel to it. Just
before the S/F line, there is a RL chicane onto the pit straight proper, and
the pit entry is straight on (like a mirror of Imola).
The official idea is to create another passing place, but they haven't done
that because chateau d'eau is too tight, the run down to lyce is too short,
and the cars actually brake as they round the left 'kink' (it is actually
quite a turn to the left - unnoticable in the dry but quite a lift in the
wet to avoid unsettling the car under braking for lyce). The RL chicane is
definitely not flat, but not a passing place either.
The real reason for the extension is grandstand capacity, which has been
increased dramatically.
Notice also that the cars run down the extreme right side of the S/F
straight, not on any grid slots at all, so there is no real 'clean' or
'dirty' side of the grid to be on.
What are the thoughts? Some drivers believe the new chicane to be
dangerous - a med RL with relatively high kerbs and a wall outside. Not
convinced myself, there should be nobody going in there underneath anybody.
Also, it's a quicker path to the finish line by driving in the pitlane (as
the S/F line is so close to the chicane), so some people are thinking that a
close end-of-race could see the trailing car heading down the pitlane to try
and gain a place at the death. That could be fun, not to mention
controversial... <g>
