OT: V5 5500 Video Playback Problem

by Peter Hoope » Thu, 11 Oct 2001 06:50:25

Hi all,

Sorry for the OT, I have been trying to sort this problem out for some
time now but am not having any luck at any of the ng's I was hoping to
find the solution from so came back to good ol' RAS to see if anyone
here has any idea how to solve it.

Basically I have a V5 5500 which I have always been pretty happy with
for running all my sims, etc. However, I have always had the
occasional problem when trying to view a video file (avi, mpg, rm,
etc) whereby it plays back with green vertical lines over it. This
problem has gotten even worse since I upgraded my system to a 1.2ghz
CPU on a VIA KT133 mb.

I can get around it most times by quickly changing the colour bit
setting using the 3DFX tools resolution option as this seems to clear
the stripes, even if after making the change I opt not to keep the
setting. However, it is getting really frustrating and I feel there
must be a solution somewhere.

Hope someone here can throw some light on it for me.

TIA

Sorry mate, can't offer any suggestions really, other than to say that I
don't have any such problems running V5 cards on three different systems

1.
AMD 1333
ASUS A7V133 MoBo
Win2000 PRO
DirectX8
SP2
Last "release" drivers from 3Dfx

2.
AMD 1333, oc'ed (*** rig :-)
ASUS A7M266
Win98SE
DirectX8
Last "release" drivers from 3Dfx

3.
P3-866
ASUS CUBX (running at 133 FSB)
Win2000 PRO
DirectX8
SP2
Last "release" drivers from 3Dfx

All three systems run without any special tweaks or anything, except for
the *** rig which may have the card OC'ed if I want to play a gfx
intensive game or something, but generally they run with "out of the
box" settings for most of the time and I have never witnessed anything
like this, and I got my first V5 not too long after became available
over here, so the one in my *** rig has been carried over on a few
upgrades now

If you need me to look up anything in particular on either of them to
help you get it sorted, let me know

Beers and cheers

Peter,

I dont know if this would be relevant or not or if anyone else had this
problem, but Using Windows media player (sorry this was a while back) and my
voodoo2 (monster12 meg) I would get 'xactly what you are talking about on my
machine,

I still have that machine, but it isnt setup right now, and I always assumed
it was the hercules Thrilller arguing with my voodoo2 card somehow...  now I
wonder if  it is something to do with direct x or active x or something?

I now have a Hercules gforce-mx, but I managed to just get a voodoo5 card
(hoping for better GPL again!)
let me know if you figure this out...  thanks

not any help I guess, just a FYI...

Many thanks Goy,

I'l check these out when I get home from work. I think I may have some
stuff that I saved from voodoosource.net so if I find them later on
I'll let you know.

I checked my HD but can only find the V5 FAQ stuff from voodoosource,
however, I am pretty sure that I have a printed copy of the tweaks,
etc. that they had on that site up in my loft somewhere... if you want
I can dig it out over the weekend and scan it for you. Anyway let me
know...

I'm going to check out the settings you posted now to see if I can get
this problem sorted out once and for all.

Cheers

OT: V5 5500 Video Playback Problem

Well, I have checked these settings against my own and most were the
same anyway but even after changing those that were different I still
have the same problem.

I am beginning to wonder if maybe there is something wrong with the
card itself now...

One thing I have also noticed today is that in the config.ini file of
F1 2001 one of the settings under COMPONENTS is VIDEORAM=25

I thought the V5 5500 had 64mb of video RAM so why is it only being
reported as 25?? Does this indicate a problem or am I not
understanding it correctly.

Anybody else with a V5 5500 and F1 2001 I would be grateful if you
would check this for me so I can see whether there is a problem here.

Also if you could let me know what results you get after running the
f1config.exe file I would be very grateful.

TIA

Peter

It has two banks of 32 that equal 64.(one for each chip)  It may be
hair-splitting but most programs don't see the 64 as one big chunk.
