V5 5500 - Artifacts on Screen

by Peter Hoope » Sat, 09 Jun 2001 20:13:35

Hi all,
Hoping someone here can help me with a slight problerm I have recently
been getting with my V5 5500. In GPL as soon as I am on the track I
get a narrow shimmering band of coloured speckles about an inch from
the top edge of the viewing area. It's no major deal but can be a
little off-putting at times. I have only noticed this over the last
few weeks.

I only see it very slightly in N4 and not at all in other sims.

If anybody can offer me any advice as to what might be causing this
and a way to prevent it I would be very grateful.

Cheers

PH

PS:- I am not overclocking the card.

PIII 600, 128mb RAM

are you overclocking your V5?  I used to run at something like 176hz(mhz?)
and got the speckles, they would show up as small red dots in the sky and on
the track.  when I set my V5 to run at 172, the speckles went away.

Try adjusting the refresh rate on your monitor.

I had a problem like that when my case got too hot even whenI wasn't
oc'ing...  Installed another fan and worked like a charm ever since.

Nope not overclocking the card Dave. It's set at 166 which I think is
the default.

Ooohh Dave,
You got gyped!!! I've been running my V5 at 183 with no lockups or
aritifacts of any kind... I haven't tried to go higher as I'm pretty happy
with this... no mods, btw, stock outta' the box.
Nah nah,

Did you notice any difference by over clocking the V5?

No not gyped...I to ran it in the 180's but did get the sparklies in GPL
and Papyrus sims.  So I backed it down.  I will say I have been more than
pleased with the compatibility of the 3dfx V5.  After reading all the
problems with the new Gee Whiz 3 card, I don't feel any pressure yet to
upgrade...WSC may be the next big hardware moneypit.

My apologies for not reading your whole original post.  You had that right
in there....sorry.  Also make sure you have fairly up to date drivers.  The
original drivers that come with the card are ok but there are better ones
out there.  The X3dfx drivers or Voodoosource.net drivers are newer and dx8
compatible(not implementing the new dx8 features but they work with dx8
well)

No probs Dave,
I'll try those drivers out and see if it does the job. Like you I am
more than happy with my V5 and even if I can;t solve this glitch it's
no biggie really.

You and me both Dave. I have been more than happy with my V5... but I have
yet to notice any "sparklies" (as you call them) and I have been running it
at 183 since I installed it last January. I installed it at the default and
then bumped it up 5mhz. at a time running it for a while and when I didn't
notice any problems with stability or artifacts I bumped it up some more...
stopped at 183 (I'm more than happy with it there). As far as WSC is
concerned, well, that's a wait and see thing isn't it? If the sim is worth
ditching a card that makes GPL abso-freakin-lutely gorgeous then I will have
to consider switching... but I have had my eye on those Kyro based cards and
I would like to see what the new Kyro 3 based card does as I have read it
will have T & L as well.

I installed the card at default and then immediately started raising it
5mhz. running some graphics intensive programs to test stability and for
artifacts and when it was okay I raised it another 5mhz. until I hit 183. I
stopped there and I have been happy at that level... didn't think there was
any point in pushing the card much more and I have had zero lockups or
graphical glitches since installing the card in January. I haven't removed
the h/s fans on the chips or anything... just out of the box it ran at this
rate.
I didn't bench it at the lower settings but I get a rock solid 36 fps (any

GPL is beautiful with this card. I average about 55fps in N4 under all
conditions with the detail sliders set at the defaults and 2X FSAA (d3d, of
course). I guess I should state that I run it on an Abit KT7A-Raid mobo (not
using the raid part just yet) with at 1.2 Ghz. T'bird (that's 9X133fsb).

Thanks for the info, something to consider if I move over 1Gig.  The "Gee
Whiz 3" may have to wait!  ;-)
