Force Feedback & GPL - verdict?

Force Feedback & GPL - verdict?

What is the objective view on Force Feedback now that Papy have got
involved.

The consensus before was that FF was not sufficiently developed.

How does it react for driving (not hitting things - cos I never do that!)

Do you feel:

loss of traction front & rear, curbs, bumps, yumps, locking wheels etc.?

Heck, if I have to persuade the wife I am going to spend more on my sim
racing than the house then I better be darned sure it is worthwhile :)

It seems I could mix the Logitech wheel with my Thrustmaster pro pedals -
anyone doing this (or similar)

Thanks in advance

Tony

You feel everything, quite literally everything.
For a company who said that FF wasn't good enough atm for GPL, they've
developed a f****ng good FF system for it.

The verdict is two thumbs way up.

Yep you feel varying levels of the above as well as the wheel getting
"heavier" as the tire loads up, this lets you know that the tire is about to
lose grip, so you can ease up and prevent it, really helped me in preventing
spins.

Yep the Logitech wheel should work great with those pedals, I'm using it
with my old Thrustmaster T2 pedals, and it makes a great combo.

Seeyas on the track.

It has "arrived".

Check out dejanews.com, there's a hundred posts singing the praises of
GPL's FF.

Yes, but that's not the half of it. The icing on the cake is feeling
the weight of the car shift, in all six directions. Makes it WAY
easier to drive the car consistently, IMO.

Dunno. I'll give you a subjective one though.

First, I think you need to tune in to a FF wheel or perhaps better put
would be, you have to tune in to the FF model. After a while
experimenting with the FF I settled in to it very well. I do feel loss
of grip, more specifically I think is you start to feel the limits of
the car - it becomes much easier to put consistent laps together.

Well, I'm not too e***d about the FF. I got a LT, and have spent a week
screwing with settings. I don't find any useful feedback, and the driving is
much more difficult. I don't like the feel of it, and wrestling with what
seems to be fairly random wheel motions is tiring. It doesn't feel anything
like driving a car and gets light and heavy in weird places.

I've gone back to my LT Formula, without the feedback, and my times have
dropped over a second, and I sometimes stay on the track for more than a lap
at a time.

My impression was close to the same. Did you have a wheel centering
problem?

Ironicly the best FF effects I have felt were with F1RS using the MS
FF wheel with the spring tenstion set at 25%. You always felt the wheel
get light when your fronts lost grip. You certainly do not get that with
the Logitech and I am affraid the difference is the drivers.

I think the difference is the software (i.e., the only
tested/developed it for one wheel). I certainly feel my wheels
breaking loose in GPL and Viper with the Logitech.

Would you care to elaborate? What did you want to do that current
hardware wouldn't allow?

Same here Kevin, with the Microsoft Sidewinder FF Wheel. The GPL FF is in a
language I don't understand yet. And sometimes it won't allow quick
corrections that would be no problem before.
I am starting to get used to the MS wheel though. The "mechanical" feel
doesn't bother me anymore and it's very precise with it's optical system
without pots.

Btw, there is no need to go back to your old wheel. Just set
allow_force_feedback = 0 in core.ini to use your new wheel without FF.
Easier to switch between FF and plain that way. So you can practise FF every
now and then.

now that IS strange because i have been trying F1RS (it comes with the
logitech wheel) for the past few days and have felt almost nothing except
for bumps with its FF effects. definately not the loss of grip that you
describe.
what do you have the settings at for F1RS (in game)?

I only have gotten those effects with the Microsoft FF
wheel. I get very poor inertia effects with the Logitech
wheel. I do know that you have to edit the ubi.ini file
for wheel FF as the default for FF is joystick.

I don't claim to get these effects with F1RS with the logitech
wheel. I get some incidential FF effects almost by accident.
