GP2 - Hockenheim

Does anyone have a decent setup for Hockenheim in GP2?

I'm trying to make decent lap times, but only manage 1:47:2 during
qualifying and 1:51:0 during races.  I race at amateur level using David
Coulthard's car, but the best computer drivers are almost a second faster
than me.  :-(

I used the following setup:  Front wing 2, rear wing 3, gears:
30,37,44,51,58,66.  I didn't alter any other settings from the defaults.

I'm sure my setup could be improved.  You have to use little downforce
on Hockenheim, but then the chicanes are very difficult to drive through
with decent speed.  Especially the chicane before the Ostkurve.

I hope I don't have to use settings like most of the F1GP hotlap settings,
because I don't like to drive with a lot of oversteer.

The sim is just great.  I used to believe I was good at F1GP (beating all
the computer players at ace level).  But in GP2 I get my ***kicked by
Schumacher, Alesi et. al. at amateur level.  I guess I have to find a better driving style :-)

I own a Pentium 100 and play in SVGA mode without any problems. 15-16
frames per second is sufficient for the game.  I use low detail for trackside
textures and turn off a few textures (especially sky) and some of the
details in the mirrors.  I feel that it is important to get the computer
occupancy down to 100% or less.  If not, the lap times in the game will
last much longer than in the real world.  Try Monaco in SVGA with all
details and you will know what I'm talking about.

My first impression of the game is that it is much more demanding to
drive the car in GP2 than in F1GP.  The two major reasons for that are
the sandtraps and the curbs.  You have to stay on the track all the time
or else you get a very unstable car (driving on the curbs) or spend a lot
of time trying to get out of the sandtrap.

The computer drivers are much smarter in GP 2 than in F1GP.  If you brake
a little too early before a curve you lose a place immediately if you have a
driver like Alesi or Schumacher in your mirrors.  With Hill in your mirrors
both you Hill will  be out of the race if you brake a little too early.  Hill will try
go get past, but will fail, as usual :-)

I feel almost like a F1GP rookie again, but I also sense the good old F1GP
many places in GP2 (like all the great driving aids etc.).  I therefore don't
feel lost in the game.  I just don't feel like an ace anymore.

I think this is very good thing with GP2.  This means many hours behind
the wheels (or the joystick) trying to improve the setup and driving
skills.  I would feel a little bit cheated if I would be able to beat all the
computer players at ace level immediately.  That's my ultimate goal,
but for now I have to try to beat Schumacher at amateur level.

I'll tell you as soon as I can even buy the game here in the US.  I
can't even find a software store that has even heard of the game,
let alone when it will be released.  ;-(

I'm working on a setup for Hockemheim. It is quit difficult to get top
speed while not loosing grip in the low speed corners and shicanes.

Attached to this mail is a rough setup.
It's worth for a 1:44.xxx lap, if you get around the cirquit without
spinning off.
Push very hard. Beware of the first two shicanes. Take the first in first,
or better in second gear with about 120 - 130 km/h
Go through the second in first gear with about 80 - 90 km/h.
(I'm not happy yet with the setup on that part of the track)
The third shicane is a lot faster. Try forth or fifth gear.
'Agripkurve' is fifth gear, next curve is first gear, while all other
corners at the Motofrom are second gear corners (about 150 - 160 km/h).

does anybody have a better setup already, which is good for laps around
1:40.xxx's  or lower?

Ypu could try to lower the ride height to about 26 mm front and 52 mm
rear and then add a lot of packers as not to bottom the car along
the long straigths. Watch the damage indicator when you reach speeds
of more than 300 Km/h or use the logging. I found that in the front,
you needed approx 26 mm of packers and in the rear ? (I believe it
was 60 mm, but don't remember). This should increase the downforce
by the chassis, so you could lower the wings a bit. Hope this works
for you, as you are faster than me (but I use the auto-shift for now)
and have only done a lap of 1:53.8.
