I thought the physics were a bit odd too until I started looking at
the speedometer.  The "in-sim" speed of the trucks is much faster than
the "apparent" speed.  Once I doped to this and backed off the
throttle, MBTR took me immediately back to my days as a truck driver.
One drives these beasts with a very light touch.  Can't wait for the
full game!

A word about the tires smoking, in the real trucks and maybe the game too
(not gonna call this one a sim) the brakes on the trucks (if I remember
correctly) are water cooled and what you see in real life from the wheels is
steam.  The brakes are cooled by spraying water on them during braking.
