I'm having bigtime fps problems with the demo, at some points the fps
is excellent, real smooth, and then very suddenly the fps drops to 7
or 8 fps... it switsches back between very good and very bad fps very
suddenly, even at points where I don't expect this. At the pits I can
understand it, lots of graphics to draw, but even at point where there
are hardly any graphics the fps drop bigtime sometimes...

Run the MBTR Setup program. There is a benchmark button there.
That'll give you an average FPS when done but you'll also be able to
observe the framerates while it's running.
Then start changing settings...   :-)
