Will Virtual Pilot controller work w/ Indycar?

by <SRS.. » Sat, 15 Jan 1994 21:14:22

I will be getting a Virtual Pilot Yoke within the next week or so and was
wondering if it would be a good controller for IndyCar?  Also, how are the
accelerator and braking systems worked on a one-joystick setup?  I have seen
a throttle control on the Virtual Pilot and what seem to be "fire" buttons on
the handles of the yoke, and was wondering if they would double over as accel-
orators and brakes, respectively? (pardon the spelling I have a class in about
2 minutes).

Anyway, thanks in advance!

Steve.

I use the Virtual Pilot Yoke with ICR and am quite pleased with it. In the
Option/Controls screen, you should select "Linear Steering/Joystick". By
default, the right button is the accelerator and the left button is the
brake. Of course, you are free to change these via Options/Controls.
There is no support for the throttle with ICR. Which reminds me, when I
read the previews for ICR, I thought they were going to support "analog"
accel and braking (i.e. throttle). What happened? I find it very difficult
to stay in the slipstream of the car ahead of me by pulsing the accel button.
What do others do to overcome this (IMHO glaring) deficiency?

I use what is called the Free Wheel (I've mentioned this
before).  It gives excelent analog control on all axis..ya..both of them...

I use the Virtual Pilot quite successfully with ICR. (and World Circuit)
in both cases I set right button for upshifts, left for down (ala semi-
automatic).  For Virtual Pilot,  I set push forward for accelerate, and
pull back for braking.  It works well, however I plan to build and accelerator
and brake pedal to replace the yoke functions so it will be more realistic.
