For the first time I went on line yestreday night ad besides the fact
that I was impressed by most of the Virtual Racers, I had a problem for
which I am sure some of you have a solution.
I tried to join, but as I was still in the pits, not even moving the
front wheels were shaking and when I engaged the first gear whenever the
wheels were shaking the engine revs where going down sharply. I went out
and eliminated some details thinking that might help, to no avail. I
must mention that anyway I had a solid 36fps, but ....

System config :
PII 450, 64 Meg
Hercules Thriller
56 K modem (rarely connecting at more than 36K)

Any ideas from the experts ?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome.

If you use a modem, set it up for 28.8 with no software compression
and no error correction. Much better.

Do you use DirectInput? If so, did you select "poll with interupts" in
the gamecontroller setup?  What controller do you use?

As for that modem, have you tried getting V.90 drivers? I used to
connect at around 33bps, but now I never go under 44, and sometimes
even as high as 48!

For online racing in GPL, most folks discover that it's better to
connect at a slower speed for more reliable online performance.

Connecting at the highest possible speed your modem can get can often
cause warping and disconnects rather than solve the problem.

Thanks to all of you for your input.
I have a 56K modem with V90 drivers but can rarely go above 36K (was told
that's because of MaBell lines). I'll try a lower speed.
As far as the wheel I use Direct input and never had problems off line
with it. I really believe my first problem is modem related as as I said,
even without moving the car it was shaking.
Thanks guys, I'll try that tonight.

Ahh, so that's why people kept saying I was better off not upgrading
my modem if I used GPL for it a lot!
