2 keyboards active at one time ?? (For homebuild racegear)

by Bobb » Mon, 20 May 2002 22:11:11

Hi all,

I have build my own racegear ( mostly for GPL )
But now I want to put some extra buttons om my dashboard.
So I've taken an old keyboard apart and put somne button on my dashboard.

But How do I make both keyboards active ???( normal and gamekeyboard )

So I don't have to switch between my office keyboard and my specail build
gamekeyboard

Any Ideas ??
Any links ??

THX in advance

Is this what you mean...

http://members.rogers.com/ecrawford1/mara/Racing%20Cockpit.htm

if so the black button in the upper right here..
http://members.rogers.com/ecrawford1/mara/Dash.jpg
switches between the "normal" keyboard for typing, and the
buttons on the dash.
I have been thinking about doing an "how to" article for
some time now, so maybe its time.
I'd be happy to help you :-)

Hi Edward,

THX for replying :)

Nice work on that***pit !!
I don't have that much space right now ... but maybe in the future there
will be and then i'm going to build one myself !!

Back on the keyboard subject.
Is'nt it possible to have both keyboards active and available for typing ??
I see myself typing away in the heat of battle on the wrong active keyboard
:)

Is this possible ??

very nice gizmo, I'll have to try making one. Mine is much
simpler, a dpst slide switch on the data wires between the
two keyboards, simple but effective as I never type while
driving. I use GPLoME with preprogramed statements ("I'm
sorry" gets used alot  lol)
Bobby since you have mounted the buttons already, this way
sounds good for you, or if you have the electronic skills
build what  Mauritz suggests.
Good luck!

2 keyboards active at one time ?? (For homebuild racegear)

I have 1 full regular keyboard and a dissected keyboard for the buttons on
the dash that using 28 keys both keyboards are PS/2 , went to radio shack
bought the PS/2 to USB converter for the dash keyboard and both are active
all the time and have had NP`s . I would think that 2 USB keyboards would
also work but have not tried that .

IIRC, the PS/2 standard supports two active keyboards on the same PS/2
port... 'cause that's how barcode scanners work on a PC.

A Y-splitter (or maybe a passthrough cable) is all you need.  The barcode
scanner acts like a keyboard, interpreting the barcode and "typing" the
ASCII equivalent.

Hi Dale,

Is it simply soldering two keyboards cables together ?? ( pin 1 on 1, 2 on 2
and so on ?? )

There's still some posts to read in this thread so it may have been
mentioned already(?).  What you're after is a Light Dependent Resister, I
believe they are like $0.35 each.  Do a search on Light Dependent Resisters
and you should get a couple hundred places to look at :-)

I was going to do this and infact may do it for the steering and gas.
For the brake's I have another goody I'm working on.

Hi Michael,

I have been playing around some time ago with the LDR's but couldn't get the
resolution I wanted.
So you say this is possible ??
Maybe I'll get my box with electronic parts from the attick and fool around
some more :)

Do you have some hints ??
I would appreciate this very much !!
