FF Wheel CPU usage question

by Kirk Hous » Tue, 11 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Most of the complaints I hear about the MS Force Feedback wheel are
based on the problem of high CPU usage.  If it uses the CPU more does it a
result in higher accuracy and lower latency or is it just bloated drivers.
I would get the LWFF for my GPL exploits but not if the MS wheel works
better in a few months when I can get a K7 800 for a few bucks.  Any Ideas?

I doubt u need a K7 800 to make the MS wheel work well, the problems u r
hearing might be from people using the wheel on Pentium I based systems but
i doubt that even the earliest PIIs would have any problems performance wise
with the MS Wheel. Anyway incase u haven't been checking sharkyextreme or
other sites lately, I'll be happy to tell u that the latest breed of PIIIs,
(Coppermines) are faster then the Athlons.

Hello,

FYI, part of the problem with the high CPU use is the gameport
interface.
Another problem with the gameport is that the bandwidth limits force
feedback effects.

With new drivers for MSFF (direct X7a) the framerate hit is old news now. Maybe
2fps max effect. People are spouting old information that has changed lately.
You think MS would stand by and let their product get bad reviews for long.
Nope.....

I think it's because of the optical sensors in it that causes the
higher CPU utilization.
