EA Sports/Feral Software F1 2000 for Mac?

by The Carvalho Famil » Sun, 03 Nov 2002 13:07:41

I'm a die-hard GPL  fan, but I've got a very cool titanium Powerbook G4
at work. I was looking through the current Macworld magazine Buyer's
Guide and noticed among the games listed: F1 2000 by www.feral.co.uk .
Their web site is Java intensive, but after much waiting, I've seen that
the product does in fact exist. Has anyone here had any experience with
it? I'm mainly interested because I'd like to have a decent sim to
distract me at work. TIA

EA Sports/Feral Software F1 2000 for Mac?

Due November 8th. I've had it on preorder since Sept. Port in progress
for several _years_ now. Doubt there will be suport for FF unless Apple
adds it to the HID in OS X 10.2.2, (.2 update  due "soon"). I too
really look forward to _any_ F1 on my Mac.

Curious as to how the port was done,  and if  there is reusable code
base to allow easier porting of F1 2001/2/3 (should enough Mac users
buy Champ2k).

F1 Champ 2k was the one before F1 2001/2002. Better graphics, lower
system reqs than  F1 2000.

Now, can .rar files be used and will cars/tracks/mods that work on the
PC side be supported?

I expect to see more after the game's release over at
www.insidemacgames.com/news/
and
www.macgamer.com

Oh, and don't forget Racer early beta for OpenGL
http://www.racer.nl/
http://racer.m4driving.sm/beta/Racer050b6.sit
it's free and has a ferrari 312!!

I think 4x4 Evolution is just about the only decent commercial sim
available on Mac. If you'll allow a shameful plug; Racer
(www.racer.nl) is also available for Mac (OS X only).

Dan,
Great info. Thanks. Just what I was looking for. I'll check the sites
you mention. BTW do you know what wheels work in OS X?
I know about Racer, but my understanding is that it's still beta and
requires a bit of knowledge about Unix, which I generally lack and would
rather not have to learn.

Ruud,
I thought Racer for OS X required some background knowledge of Unix. I
don't have those skills, and there are other tools I'm trying to learn
right now. I am eagerly awaiting Racer, and you can bet I'll  $upport it.
BTW can you point me to some information about which steering wheels
work in X? TIA

Hmhm, although Evo sure was a decent game, I wouldn't exactly call it a
sim (no damage possible and only partly implemented physics). Fun to
play though.

As for Racer, well, after Nascar I, so far it's the only gam... eh beta
in town as far as the Mac is concerned - too bad even with a Radeon I
still can't get decent fps (>20) in some corners though, but that's what
betas are for and it still might surpass F1 2000 in 2003!   :)

*** the mac.  EA is money hungry, do you think they care about
software for 4% of all computers sold.

You think they'd start to care if those 4 per cent disappeared as well.
Consider the consequences and be warned y'all.

Ah, yes.  I knew it wouldn't be long before someone started with the
Market-Share bullshit.

I wish I had a product to sell to 25 million Mac users.
