I'm DRIVING the ferrari, and it's roar scares me right off the track!!

.. but seriously... I have the same problem as you.. as soon as I hear a car
behind me, I tense up, and think how the heck did he just catch me - I just
did me best lap ever!! "Don't crash.. don't crash.. come on.. nice and
easy... make him pass me.. don't make a mistake for him gain a place so
easily.."

Next thing you know, I'm upside down over a fence!!

...and more often than not, you're in the fence because the AI car rammed
you up the rear end.  Even when braking at the last possible moment or even
later than possible (i.e., when you are going to go off the track), I still
get hit from behind by AI cars quite frequently if they are following.  I
notice it particularly coming up to the Parabolica...and I know how to hold
off on my braking quite well for that corner, so it's not because I'm
moronically braking way to early for another driver to anticipate.

Marc.

This is when experience comes in. In real racing you can intimidate novice
drivers into making mistakes by just staying in their mirrors. Usually the
first time a driver leads a race he will make a mistake but after He's been
in the lead a few times the confidence builds and he can cope with the
pressure hopefully. Too bad the AI cars dont get nervous and make mistakes.

Well, I have had that problem myself, and got so frustrated with it that
I...compensated for it.  Now I have to judge my braking not only for cars
ahead of me, but behind me as well.  I suppose this is Papy's way of making
us aware of our surroundings.

WIshing (like many of us, I suppose) I was old enough to have experienced
these drivers and cars in the era simulated...

Yep. I do excatly the same thing. I'm fine by myself, but as soon as I'm
in a close race, I get the "race jitters" and go WAYYY to deep into a
corner and loose it. I guess you can try ignoring the other cars as much
as possible, and practise, practise, practise...

While you practice: find some visual reference points around the track
for your turn-in and braking points. At least one on and one off the
track...this way you'll know where you are without getting too
desperate; AND: always leave a bit of room for error: If you are right
behind somebody, they might brake a little sooner that you think!Always
*plan* your passing and defensive moves. Try thinking ahead; what is
possible before I finish the next segment?
One example, say exiting Parabolica at Monza, with two cars up ahead,
and more behind. You are quite close to the one in front of you. To make
it complicated; here are some possibilities;

1) You have gotten a really good exit. So...
    a) You are likely to get a good draft from the ones in front of you.
Check your mirrors to see if the guy behind you has been as good as you.
You'll soon find out, but, stay concentrated on the ones in front.
    b) The straight coming up may be enough for passing the guy(s) in
front, but remember: Your entry speed into C.Grande will be higher than
usual, and you will probably stay a bit more to the right to defend your
pass, and the guy you just passed will try to get a run at you out of
C.Grande into Lesmo1 just because of this. Stay in the draft until you
decide whether the pass will work, then commit to it. There is a point
where you should get off the gas if you see that it won't happen. BUT-
don't go all the way back to the ideal line, this will help the guy
behind you to pass if you had to ease off. If he seems to be too far
away, brake earlier and easier, and get back in line. The guy in front
will be a bit upset, and normally make a bad entry. Go in wide, get a
smooth exit, and try to get him into Lesmo1.
The braking/downshift point into c.Grande is a little way into the dark
"ideal line" on the left.
If the pass was successful, slow down a bit in the middle of curva
grande ( a BIT), so your opponent has to back off too, and destroy his
attempt at drafting you down to Lesmo1.

2) Your exit sucked, So...
You are going to get passed. Well- help him! Go over to the left, let
him pass, check for more cars, and get back into his draft as quickly
and smoothly as possible. Get on the ideal line, and check your mirrors.
If you are lucky, you may catch up with him. Don't try blocking, it will
be your own and several others retirement...

Hope it helps...

See ya'll online!

Hi Marc

Too right - the AI in GPL are totally unrelaistic IMO. In some corners I'm
much faster, in others they seem to to benefit from twice as much grip. I
hope someone produces a patch soon so I can last a decent race length
without getting shunted off.

I think everyone goes through this.  It's coping with this pressure
that makes online so much more fun... Seat time online is all you
need.  Two weeks ago, I started racing at VROC, and the first time I
had a mirror-full of Ferrari, I just self destructed.  Now, after a
few online races, I truly relish being in human traffic.  It's the
unpredictability that's heads over racing against AI.  Now, I only
self destruct when I'm up front. ;)

Don't expect too much right away.  As with everything in this sim,
seat time is the biggest key to improvement.  The longer you do this,
the more fun it gets!  Good luck, and see ya online!

No kidding...that was a *great* battle we had at Zandvoort! And
then our Monza battles weren't too bad as well.

You said it all right there.
More seat time = better driving = more fun.

The only way to be able to brake for Parabolica with an AI on your tail and live
to tell about is to brake very late (at the red sign to the left) and then
downshift very fast to second gear, this will help shorten the braking distance.
You also have to increase the brake pressure a little as the speed comes down in
second gear. I can do it, not very often though, and my best at Monza is a
1:28.10 in the Lotus.

How do you do that?  I am braking at the absolute last possible moment/point
on the track to not fly off the corner and I still get shunted by the AI
cars.  The only way I can avoid getting shunted is to move off line to the
right, which then allows the car with the apparently vastly superior brakes
to go by on my left.  And, just in case anyone is wondering, this is
happening with hot tires.
