Installed DX6. Now can't run GP2

by CM » Thu, 13 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I installed DX6 and now I can't run GP2.  The computer just halts on a blank
screen and I have to reboot.  Since DX6 can't be uninstalled, I'll have to
do something drastic like reformat the hard drive unless someone has a
brilliant idea for me.  Every other game works with DX6.   Well that's not
quite true; my Warbirds flightsim did the same thing as GP2 did but I've
since downloaded new D3D drivers for that.  I don't suppose there are any
new drivers for GP2 are there?  That would be asking too much from
Microprose.

Dont blame GP2, i have w95 with dx6 and just tried GP2 and it works fine
here.

It must be something else.

Mike.

Just guessing here, but....

Try installing DX 5 and see if it helps. Being a Warbird player I imagine
you may have a MS Sidewinder (me too), that install disk has DX 5 on it..

Hope it helps.

GP2 is a DOS game, so, it doesn't need any new drivers because it will not
use DX. The better way to run it is to configure it's shortcut to run on
MS-DOS mode (right click, properties, program, advanced, MS-DOS mode). This
way, Win95 will shutdown and run the game and after it, will restart. As a
side effect, you will gain around 15~20% more FPS what is good for GP2.

I can second the DX6 problem.  GP2 worked fine in DX5, but doesn't run anymore
with DX6.  It just freezes at a blank screen.  I'm gonna try going back to DX5
and see what happens.

Well, I reinstalled GP2 and now it works.  Somehow (I think) DX6 didn't like
the nocdrom.exe utility I was running.  Strange. I'd say.  Anyone else have
the same sort of brazenness happen to them?

Did you try to run GP2's setup utility after installing DX6?
I've had similar problems because the installation of some software insists
in changing the settings of my sound card, causing that GP2 will not run
without running setup and re-detecting the sound card.

Finally some sense. Grand Prix 2 is a DOS game for the days when we had DOS
and/or Windows not just Windows. Anyone who tries to run GP2 in Windows 95/98
needs shooting because they're slowing the game down and also risking crashes
on those occasions that Win95 decides it needs to do something in the
background.

Are you joking with this or do you just not understand this
stuff? DirectX has no impact whatsoever for DOS games.

I have DX6 running on my Windows 95 installation and everything works
fine, no problems at all - no real benefits either, but that's the
issue with GP2!

In addition, you can always un-install Direct X through the
install/uninstall Software tool in the Control Panel.

It will if it changes the IRQ settings of the Plug & Pray ***(I prefer
jumpers because they let _me_ set things the way _I_ want them).
