OK While I was on vacation last week I read the whole
manual and strategy guide. I noticed that the Ferrari is
not even mentioned! I guess if you want speed you will
drive the Lotus, and use the Brabahm if you want to win
the championship. My question is, was the Ferrari really
that bad? So far my best time in the Ferrari at Monza is
a 1:35.200 and I qualify in 13th for a Novice race. I actually
finished 10th once :-)

I am finding GPL to be more what I expected of the modern
F1 games than I would have expected. Once I used separate
throttle/brake axis I noticed that the Logitech pedals do give
very fine braking control. All in all great fun. Plus no other game
I know of lets you rev the engine and pop the clutch like in
a real (even modern) F1 race. I am finding that I can start
races *MUCH* better in GPL than I could in F1RS.

The Ferrari was a late addition to GPL, and didn't make it into Four Wheel
Drift. It's surely not a bad car at all- probably the most balanced and
rewarding car in the sim.

The Ferrari isn't mentioned because apparently Papy were unable to get
the license for it until the last minute, by which time the strategy
guide had been printed.

In his follow-up to the guide on Alison's site, author Steve Smith is
able to talk about the Ferrari. He reckons it to be the best all-round
car.
It's certainly my favourite. I was a Lotus driver until I discovered the
Ferrari in December. I am now well and truly a Ferrari guy and as soon
as my new PC gets here (it's finally on order now :-) ) I'll be running
a full offline Grand Prix championship with it.

My best with it (with GPL 1.0) is 1m28.09, and some were doing high
1m27s with it so it's not that bad :-)

I remember Steve Smith (author of 4w drift) saying that he himself was
surprised that the ferrari stuff didn't make it into 4w drift.
Anyway, he's completing his book, including ferrari stuff, on the
eagle woman's site:

Ferrari in 1967:

Kyalami:          -
Monaco:           3rd (Amon), (>=7th, fatal accident (Bandini)
Zanvoort:         4th (Amon), 5th (Parkees), 6th (Scarfiotti)
Spa:              3rd (Amon), (>=10, Scarfiotti), (last Parkees)
Le Mans/Bugatti:  (>=8 Amon)
Silverstone:      3rd (Amon)
Nurnburgring:     3rd (Amon)
Mosport:          6th (Amon)
Monza:            7th (Amon)
Watkins Glen:     (>=9 Amon)
Mexico:           8th (Jonathan Williams), 9th (Amon)

So, not too bad, not too good? In accordance with GPL?

Arto

PS What happened to Scarfiotti? Who was J. Williams?

>Ferrari in 1967:

<snip results for '67>

According to Forix, http://www.forix.com  Jonathan Williams was a British
driver, by way of Cairo, who only ran one GP, Mexico 1967. Qualified 16th,
finished 8th.

As for Scarfiotti:

"1968 - 3 F1 GP (Cooper), 6 points, J13th. (4th Spain, Monaco). 2nd in BOAC
500 (Porsche). Crashed into trees while practising for Rossfeld hill-climb.
Ran straight on at a corner and was killed"

Greg, the Ferrari isn't mentioned in the manual due to the fact that, when
it was printed, the inclusion of the Ferrai in GPL was not guaranteed.

Licensing issues caused us to remove references to the Ferrari from the

Randy,

Ever since I read the manual,I've wanted to know just what licensing
issues? If they signed a contract to allow you to use the name, then what are
you referring to?

The fact that the people who type in the words for the manual, aren't the
same people who program the game, the manual is probably done WAY before the
game is finished, so they can release them at the same time, how would it
be..... you go to a shop and buy a game...... all you get is a CD in a clear
case, 4 months later a box and manual arrive from the post........

What I mean is that the Ferrari deal was real late getting signed (like he
said), which means the manual was written and stamped.

They didn't have the license in time.
