frame rate problem in GPL

by Matti Hirvone » Thu, 02 Aug 2001 06:01:17

I have this weird problem with frame rate. When Im playing offline all by
myself I have worse framerate than in Vroc with all the other players. With
AI cars it`s almost impossible to play. In Vroc I can use all the details in
mirrors but offline I cant get same FPS even with mirrors and dynamic
lighting turned off. This is very annoying especially in that hairpin at
Rouen where FPS drops to 24-25 and in Vroc it`s solid 36. And YES, I`m not
using FSAA offline and all the other graphic settings are also same than in
Vroc. So can someone help me?

That would sound like your cpu reaching it's maximum.  Online removes the
AI calculations from the mix and frees up the cpu for improving frame-rate.
So when you are offline, the the cpu has to work harder to keep all the AI
info correct.   You might want to move the graphic detail more to the left
to lessen the strain on your system.
   Good luck

btw...N4 Online runs much faster than offline as well.

I understand this with AI but when playing alone framerate is still worse
than in Vroc. So are you saying CPU has to work with AI even there is no AI
cars on track? I wonder how it`s possible that Duron 800 Mhz reach its
maximum with game which is almost three years old?

It is a possibility.   Think for a moment, go back the 3 years to when GPL
was released....can you remember ANY system that could run GPL with full
detail and full fields...
But now seeing your single player vs vroc framerates, that  does sound a
bit odd. Remove the ai from your testing and you shouldn't be burdening the
cpu.  I would suggest testing to see how far you have to move the details
slider, I think that item has the greatest effect on GPL framerate.
As a last resort...are you using the opengl 3d graphics or the D3D?  I
would suggest, based on other users input here, that the D3D 'should'
outperform opengl on your system. Give both a try and see if that makes a
difference
Good Luck.

You have an antique system (spec wise) and if you are running GPL with
upgraded tracks and/or cars and tires and***pits....your system isn't good
enough to get much better performance than you report.  GPL is a CPU
intensive sim.......and a Duron 800 is weak by today's CPU standards.  Added
to the problem is you are using a sound card that requires CPU cycles to
operate (as opposed to an SB Live which essentially uses "zero" CPU
resources).

What kind of modem is that?   Is it just a 56k internal one?  If so,
then perhaps it's a software modem stealing some cpu cycles.

Tom, I disagree that it is too weak to run GPL properly. Agreed, the
s/c will slow things down a bit, but a Duron 800 and gf 256 should
easily be able to get 36 fps.

I had a k6-2 300 and voodoo banshee which had no problem getting 36
fps at 800x600, and his system is easily 4xfaster.

Are you using d3d or openGL? d3d is usually faster I believe. Set
mirror refresh lower (although you had them turned off didn't you?

You didn't say what res you're using, but you should be able to run
800x600 at least, and prob 1024x768 as well.

Make sure you don't have the detail slider too far to the right, keep
it in the middle at best. And check the drivers, dx8, etc.

Hey,

Ditto, i disagree as well. I had a K6-2 400 with an OLD 4mb Rendition V2100
board that would hit 36fps. There's something else wrong in the system. GPL
is indeed a CPU intensive sim, but it certainly shouldn't overpower an
800MHz processor.

Oops, looks like a read your post backwards. :)

Anyway, I currently have a very similar setup as yourself in terms of
hardware:

Abit Kt7a
Duron 800
SB AWE 64
Voodoo3 2000
128Mb PC 100 Ram
Thrustmaster USB steering wheel & pedals

With this system I am easily capable of running GPL at 800x600 with a
full field and detail bias set to about 2/3rds, everything turned on
except drivers arms and can start from the back with 36fps, even with my
lowly V3 2000.  So its not a performance problem.  I do still use the
Glide Mirror hack from Mr Smiley I believe.
