GPL G400 D3D tyre smoke?

GPL G400 D3D tyre smoke?

by Laurence Wilme » Tue, 17 Apr 2001 07:15:59

Just realised (been playing GPL for weeks) that I'm getting dust on
the grass but no tyre smoke on the tarmac.
Should there be any? Working on my starts - wondering if perhaps tyres
are so hard there is none? (All graphics set to max).
Cheers

You should be getting tire smoke (in general that is, I don't know anything
about the G400 in particular). Are you sure that under GPL graphic options
it isn't just turned off?

No - all graphic options are on: Fire, Smoke, Dirt, Dust, Sparks, Skid
and Detail Bias to High.
Used the 1.2, D3D and NOCD patches - startup screen says ver. 1.2.0.1

Wondering if I have anything wrong? But thanks, its good to know it
should be there. So now I have a little project - as if there wasn't
enough to learn with GPL!

Your setup sounds the same as mine, except I don't have the nocd patch.
I see the tire smoke.  Same Matrox G400, D3D, etc.

Just starting normally may not produce tire smoke.  You should try a few
doughnuts at Mexico or some place open to see if the tires do light up
:-)

Jason.

Yes, thanks, you're entirely correct. Do a doughnut and get tyre smoke
after a 180 only.
So its no guide to good starts - or braking without locking then
Thanks..

GPL G400 D3D tyre smoke?

No, you will normally get tyre smoke when locking the brakes, but won't get
it when wheelspinning at the start.

Not sure why that is - if you look at videos of real 1967 starts you can
hardly see the cars for all the tyre smoke!

Perhaps the frame rate hit at the start was thought to be too much
already....

GPL G400 D3D tyre smoke?

Your tires will only start smoking when they reach a certain
temperature.  On a start your tires are cold; therefore, it will take
much more wheelspin to start them smoking.

When your braking, your tires are probably already pretty warm so
dragging them 25 ft would cause smoke :)

It goes to show how realistic GPL is.

Jason.

Not just realistic, but ***ive! There's been nothing to match it
for that since... Elite & the split-screen Pitstop2 on the C64 and the
original Indy 500 on the PC.
Shame its not better known outside this NG - and it didn't make the
creators lots of money!
Thanks for those explanations.

GPL G400 D3D tyre smoke?

by Juan Vizos » Thu, 19 Apr 2001 13:08:50

The guy who mentioned frame rate hit got it spot on...  in order to cut down
on the awesome frame rate hit everybody vanishing in smoke would cause...
and the ensuing disco's crashes etc... the thing is programmed  not to show
tire smoke for a certain time after a start.... I read this ..it may not be
true.. but it makes sense to me ..GPL is so OPTIMISED for online play!!
woohoo       jv
