GP3 slowmo?

GP3 slowmo?

Gp3 will take advantage of 3d acceleration hardware, whereas Gp2 was solely
reliant on the cpu, so I'd be very surprised (and extremely disappointed) if
we get slowmo probs in GP3.
Cheers Phil

Are there any GP3 beta testers in here?

I hope that it doesn't have the same slomo problems that GP2 had.

Well, no matter if you have 3d acceleration or software rendering, the
cpu will get some overload at starts and very complex situations
anyway. And you know how G.C. solved that problem in an earlier game :)

The real question is:

Real time engine, drop frames.
Or engine runs in game times- slower than real time to make up frame rate.

GP2's slowmo was to do with the frame rate. Instead of dropping frames like
GPL it would slow the action down to hold a certain frame rate. In GP2 the
action was not in real time. At the time of GP2's release I saw this as a
real limitation to any chance of a multiplayer patch, any more than 4 cars
and the combined slow periods (high graphic areas ect.) of all 4 cars would
slow the game right down.
4 cars. I read somewhere that is the limit in GP3 .
As for hi powered computers and 3d cards, I saw f12000 running on  a
800mhz with a geforce2 and it was still a dog. Dont expect GP3 to run to
well on your p2 with the voodoo2 card.
To be quite honest I not setting my expectations to high for GP3 . The lack
of online multiplayer will be enough for even a great game to fade away to
the back of my hard drive. Of the 1000s of hours of GPL not much at all has
been offline and then only to practice for online.

The real question is: if one programs for 3D cards, is it still
*possible* to take the approach that allows slowmo?

Anybody knowledgable enough to shed some light on this?

I'm not knowledgable, but I don't care :)

I would guess it is still possible with slomo and 3D cards. There is
no difference in telling the 3D card to draw a image 30 times per
second, than there is to run a subroutine that draws a software image
30 times per second. 3D cards is only drawing still pictures, the
program makes them flow.

Yes, it's entirely possible.  The two (software vs. hardware rendering, and
what to do when it takes a long time to render a frame) are disjoint issues.

Randy I don't think you should consider yourself knowledgeable.

Proof me wrong with GPL 2, please?

Argh!  You fools! :o)  It's not a "problem"!  All you have to do is turn
your detail and/or framerate down enough and the problem disappears!  GP3
will support 3d graphics cards, so it just might run faster and thus make
the "problem" easier to solve.  GP2's approach to framerate is better than
other sims because a nice steady framerate is essential for good car
control.  It's just a shame GP2 is so cpu intensive that the framerates
generally suck.

Both Daves and your response I really don't understand, could you shed a
light?

Ok Harjan I will try to explain firstly Dave's comments.

The trapped Brer Rabbit escaped the clutches of Brer Fox by pleading with
him to do anything with him other than throw him in a briar patch. The fox
couldn't resist but do the worst to Brer Rabbit and threw him in the briar
patch. Which was exactly what Brer Rabbit wanted him to do. The cunning
outwitted the stronger.

Hence your comment is maybe a "Brer Rabbit", trying to get someone to
unwittingly do what you want .

My comment took your first paragraph out of context "Randy I don't think you
should consider yourself knowledgeable"

With the god-like way this newsgroup is purported to hold Papyrus, I could
only think of the Monty Python film "The Life of Brian" and the stoning
scene and the gasping crowd shouting "Blasphemy" as anyone in RAS could dare
to belittle Randy Cassidy!

Hope this helps :-)
