Grand Prix Legends 3D Card help.......

by Blackout6 » Thu, 01 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Ok, Awhile ago, I got GPL, and when I started it under OpenGL mode (After the
Patch) Everything in the INTERFACE was black, except for the Text (Testing,
Replays, Driver Info, etc.) and when I went to the next screen, it still stayed
with a black background, but the text changed appropiately as it should, but It
went right over the previous' screens text, so like, Testing and Car Damage
Model, would be laying on top of one another.  I got  new drivers, and it fixed
it, and I havent got new Drivers since.
Yesterday I got on GPL, and it did it all over again.

NOTE: The actual Gameplay is fine, the problem is getting through the interface
to get to the gameplay...

Comp Specs
DELL 450
Riva TNT 16MB 3D card
96 MB

Any Suggestions?????????

Personally, I recommend getting a voodoo based board for running GPL.  I had a
16meg TNT like you, and a 12 meg V2.  The voodoo card out performed the TNT
every time.

As I own a TNT2 and a Voodoo2, I will be unbiased in my answer and try
not to get into a Nvidia vs 3dfx war. What drivers are you using for
you Riva TNT? I have noticed that my brother-in-law (he has same card
as you) sees the same, if not better performance from the latest TNT
driver from Nvidia Detonator 3.68. We both have Dell 500s the only
difference being the video he has the TNT and I have the TNT2. In GPL
I notice no difference in performance. He installed the 3.68 drivers
and all worked great, I installed the 3.68 drivers and my mirrors were
all messed up. I did the buffer flip mode thing and all is fine. He
never had to do the mirror fix, I think.

I can remember reading all sort of benchmarks on the net about how the TNT
was faster than a V2, so I bought one (STB Velocity 4400) and benchmarked it
in Quake2, and just like the benchmarks on the net, it was faster.  Then I
noticed tearing and realized v-sync was turned off by default on the TNT,
but on by default on my V2.  So I switched off v-sync on the V2 as well, and
would you believe it, the V2 (single board 12 MB) was actually faster than
the TNT!
I'm not saying this applies to any other scenario, but it is a true story.

Yeah, but the TNT is a 32 Bit color card while the Voodoo 2 is just a 16 bit
card. That's making my TNT last a bit longer than the V2, as well as the 4
additional megs of ram.

NFS:PU still runs just fine (I can't notice any slowdown, except on the
starts during the replays, but then it just seems slow not choppy.)  in
letter box at 1024x768x32.... I'd like to hear if anyone can do that with
their V2?

It's also an AGP card, which the V2 isn't.

That's not to say I'm not planning on a GForce 2 GTS this fall\winter,
depending on how NASCAR 4  and WSC runs.

If anyone is interested my specs are:

128 MB RAM (100 Mhz)
Sound Blaster Live! (Upgraded from onboard crystal soundboard)
32x CD and plenty of space on the ol 6 gig hard drive. :)
STB Velocity Riva TNT 16 MB.
