If it's a Vortex2-based card (Diamond MX300, for example), try putting a
check mark for Disable DirectSound Hardware Accleration option on it's
control panel.

Try selecting "Direct Input" rather than "Generic" as you
joystick driver. If you find that you can't start the game without
the whole program slowing down, try erasing your default player's
controls.cfg. Then go back to step 1.
