Is anyone having trouble posting good qualifying times?

The sim only has one qualifying lap, so on short tracks my tires are not
heated up by the time the green flag drops.  On cold tires, the 3000+ lb.
stock car is an loose beast!

Once my tires are warm, I can run speeds that would qualify near the top,
but on the one qualifying lap I am consistantly near the back of the pack.

Don't know why we only get one lap.  I'll I've qualfied at has been
Bristol.  I turned a 125.804  Which would give me the pole at 100%  Not
that I can do it everytime.

Any thoughts on why no warm up lap.

The reason for this is simple -- that's how NASCAR mandates qualifying.
Having been to races and qualifying, I have seen for myself that all you
get is one lap.  A lot of complaints I have seen about the sim are about
things that are simulating REALITY.  To these people, I say: If you don't
want reality, use Stunts or Bill Elliott's NC.  I mean, really.

Also, about SVGA, kids.  Yes, it is true that the SVGA eats processors
for breakfast.  But then if you keep up on industry news, soon we'll be
seeing 686 chips and 786 chips (don't laugh, they're already built) which
will make NASCAR's SVGA FLY, and I mean FLY.  And this is not something
five years from now, this is SOON.

Until then, I really wish people would look at the SIMULATOR and not
niggle around for eye-candy.  IF you truly feel that if it don't look
good, it don't play good, go buy a CD-I and play Burn Cycle.

Ahhh.  That felt better.

Welcome to Nascar... 8^)

That's how they do it in real life, so I'm glad they do it that way for the
game (although I would have like to have seen a "second day qualifying" option
for the game).

That's the reason Hoosier tires got so many poles this past season... they're
stickier than the Goodyears when they're cold.

Later...
Steve

Tony, are you sure about this?  I recall several races this year where the
drivers talked about their two qualifying laps.  The most recent one was
when Ted Musgrave got the pole (Martinsville?)  He commented that his first
lap was excellent, and his second was total crap.  In fact, I think Tom
Skaggs (go #6) was there and made the same comment.

I attended qualifying at Rockingham in October, and the qualifying was
shortened to 1 lap due to time constraints - but I don't think this is
normal.  I am far from an expert on the subject, though.  Most people
don't even get to see qualifying, let alone know all the rules about it.

Any authorities out there?  It's me against Tony!  :-)

Funny - I thought I was discussing a serious part of the SIMULATION.

I understand your pain - but HEY, I'm on your side!

Looking forward to IWCC.

Sorry I thought you got a warm up lap.  With no tracks close home I've
really never been to qualifying.  Been to alot of races but never made
quailfying.

No complaints from this end.  A couple questions maybe, but that's
what were here for, right?  BTW anybody looking for a slightly used
copy of Bill Elliott's NC. <G>

I bought the P-90 because that was the ultimate machine available to the
public.  Bought the best video card I could find after research.
Alot of the reason I went with a P-90 and not a Dx was I knew Nascar would
be    a power hungry beast.  I was hoping it would be a great sim, and it is.
And yes the P-90 also runs Word Perfect well. <G>

If I post a question about how to make a pentium perform better in Nascar,
it's not that I'm complaining about the game.  I'm simply trying to
get the most performance out of my machine.  Which is what racing and
computers are all about.  I think Nascar is great, it doesn't bother me
that I have turn a few options off, and I like the fact
that the game keeps the future in mind.

I've ran about 1,000 test laps at Bristol. <G>  I feel I'm looking at the
SIMULATOR a good bit.  But I got to tell you there's plenty of eye caddy
in the sim for me that goes along well with the reality of the game.
Goodness it doesn't get a prettier that this.  I mean it beats watching
T.V.

And I can't afford the CD-I after the P-90. <HG>

Ahhh.  That feels better.

I'm pretty sure it is dependant on the track, and it seems to be the same in
the sim.  I know at Talladega, I get a warmup lap and 2 qualifying laps.  So
they must have modeled it after each individual track.

--- Agreed, the qualifying can be bothersome, but it's the way it is
(re: real).  Just make some MASS adjustments to your race set-up for
qualifying to tighten up the 'oversteer' tendencies (read: MUCH wedge for
many of the tracks).  Maybe knock off some stagger and add some spoiler/lower
frnt. air dam if not already at max. and speed is of less importance then
handling.  Wheel Lock as a last tweak. I've gotten good results qualifying.
My qualify runs at Atlanta generally get me a 10-15 grid position (haven't
tweaked out the qual. set up totally yet, may get better but I wanted
to RACE :-) surely you could understand that? ;-)) at 100% Opp.Strength.
I can usually at elast keep pace after a lap or two with my current race
set-up..... I can't say enough about this game :-) !!!  Great!

Good luck qualifying...

Another tip:  lower the tire pressure a pound or two.  This will cause
the tires to heat up a little faster.
