Things I miss in F1-2001

OK, I think F1-2001 is fabulous, but there are still a few little things
which I would have liked to see, after playing GP3 and F1-2001 back to back.

1. Open wheelers are dangrous partly because they are open-wheelers.  Ask
Patrese.  Ask Christian Fitipaldi.  Ask Burti etc.  I liked the idea of
getting *really* nervous whenever racing in close quarters in GP3.
Sometimes wheel-to-wheel contact meant a little hop and a spin, and other
times it was up, up and away into the wild blue yonder.  In F1-2001 it's
just bump, bump, bump.  Borrring.

2. Hey, where did the wreck go?  Nothing like barrelling towards a pile-up
at the end of a fast straight, getting all sweaty as you plan your way
through the mesh, and then watch the cars magically disappear.  Hopefully
ISI will delay the removal of the cars a little, and if we're really lucky,
they'll have them pushed aside, or be lifted by cranes, rather than just
disappear.  Maybe they just knew that the AI would have a difficult time
avoiding the pile-up, so they clear it as fast as possible.  Too bad.

Otherwise, I'm enjoying it a lot, and GP3-2000 is gone from my HD, despite
it's good points.  Mostly it's because it just refuses to run well on XP
with my GeForce, despite 1GHz of processor pushing it.  F1-2001 on the other
hand flies.

Fair go, David - he did make some valid points...

???

He did make some good points.

I really do wish it had a ghost mode. Just adding to his list. I think a
ghost mode is one of the best and quickest ways to improve your driving and
see the effects a setup has on the car. It's also makes hotlapping a lot
more interesting and fun. I can't remember for sure, but I think F12000/CS
had a ghost mode.

Did you think I was being sarcastic?

Some other things I'm thinking of, but perhaps I haven't been running it
long enough to refute the following:

1. AI cars are built like tanks.  I watched Ralf Schumacher do the same move
as Montoya at Canada, roll nearly over on his back, then keep on driving.
The AI gets away with a lot of heavy hits which would have them out of the
race in GP3.

2. Saving during a race weekend.  Can you do this, and I just haven't found
it in the manual (german)?  Can you accelerate the Q-session between your
timed laps?

3. Something more obvious than a little yellow light on the wheel to warn of
a wreck ahead.  Flagmen would be nice, or at least a radio message.

4. Do AI cars ever blow their engines?  It really added to the realism to be
pushing another driver for a few laps, then watch their engine let go.

The rules are better implemented than GP3 (nice to have stop and gos and
black flags for cutting the track, but not he silly slow-down of GP3).
However, I was DQ'ed for coming back up the escape road at Canada to rejoin
the track after I overcooked T3.  I returned to the pits, they refueled me
and let me go on driving (although I wasn't classified at the end).

Oh, and lap charts...

Oh, and could we please sprinkle a few fans in the seats during free
practice?  I know the tickets are expensive, but I still think some people
show up.

Add to that the pit crews for the other cars when you come screaming into
the pits.  They can be static, but it would be nice to have them.  Of
course, this would seriously drag down the framerate, so I suppose it's
obvious why it's not there.

Put my vote firmly on the side of "animated pit crews are not just eye
candy".  This is a great addition to a sim, really pulling you into the sim,
especially with the different animations for full pit stop vs. stop and go.

These are all nit-picking points.  The basic foundation of F1-2001 is very
solid, and I can't put it away each evening.  The track accuracy doesn't bug
me so much, mostly because my few favourites are good enough.  I always
hated Hungary...

cheers
Stephen
