tried Thrustmaster Pro FCS w/ ICR or WC?

tried Thrustmaster Pro FCS w/ ICR or WC?

by Bill Met » Sun, 14 Aug 1994 17:24:47

Has anyone out there tried the Thrustmaster Pro Flight Control System
with ICR or World Circuit?  I was wondering if the stiffer springs add
anything to a driving sim.
I'm getting a new system and I fell in love with this joystick when I
felt it.  But would I still be better off with one of the T1 units if I
don't care about the peddles?

Thanks,
-Bill

I have both and the T1 is much better for driving than any joystick.
Also, the pedals really can improve your times as you get proportional
throttle and brake in a reasonable way.

Going in the other direction, can the T1 pedals be used as rudders? I have the
full thrustmaster flight set (RCS, PFCS w/ 20# springs, and a WCS II). I hate
the RCS, and would gladly replace it with something reasonable.

For my taste, the PFCS is a bit too stiff for driving. The feather weight
springs in my old FCS lets me rest my hand on the base, and wiggle it from
the bottom. But I can't reach the hat or switches from there (the hat seems
ideal as a gear shift).

The WCS is somewhat usable as the gas and brake in ICR. Just put the WCS on
the bottom detent before you hit enter in the calibration screen. It's less
than ideal, though. The throw for full throttle is a bit on the long side, and
proportional braking is a bit of a joke with what's remaining. (But after
800 hours of stick time in Falcon 3, you form a mindset that this is how ALL
sim's should be played. :)

I woke up this morning with an impulse to buy a T1; thankfully, my local
supplier doesn't stock it. What am I missing?

Yes, the T1 pedals can be used as rudders.  I haven't tried it, but I've heard
from others that it works.  The way the pedals work is that they represent the
X-axis of the second joystick.  Pushing the brake pedal is like pushing the
second joystick left and pushing the gas pedal is like pushing the second
joystick right.  I'm not sure what happens when you push both.  I suspect that
the springs in the pedals are somewhat strong for use as rudder pedals though.

Just imagine what kind of mindset you've formed about driving after thousands
of hours of driving real cars :)  I found the T1 much more natural; it instantly
improved my lap times and is much more enjoyable.

The only thing I would change would be to add fingertip gearshift buttons
on the wheel.  The gearshift lever, while perhaps more realistic, requires
you to remove your right hand from the wheel to shift.  I think I am going
to add some small switches at the 10 and 2 positions on the wheel for up and
down shifting.

That's too bad.  These things are best bought on impulse.  I find that
agonizing over things like this is bad for your health.  If you're married
though, the T1 is hard to hide.

Well, I have a Virtual Pilot too, and what I do is take advantage of
ICR's ability to change the function assignments for the joysticks and
control the car this way:

Accelerate: Top-mounted throttle (calibrate as joystick 2's Y axis)
Brake:  Left yoke button
Reverse: Right yoke button

Works great for me, 'cause with the independent throttle I don't have to
use the yoke's other axis for acceleration (which gets REAL old REAL
fast).  On those courses that I shift independently, I configure my right
shift key as shift up and the control key below it as downshift.

Hope this helps!

tried Thrustmaster Pro FCS w/ ICR or WC?

Hi again,

Not only would I like to get a CD-Rom drive (as per yesterday's post)
but I'm also sort of shopping around a bit for "rudder" pedals that would work
nicely as gas/brake combo with Indycar.  I currently have a CH-Products
Virtual Pilot yoke (which works extremely well for ICR), but just is not
versitile enough for my liking to permit standard shifting during play. (I HATE
pushing and pulling it for a driving sims so I'm running out of axis' :) ).
Anyone out there got any good suggestions on a combination that would
function nicely with my configuration (and that wouldn't cost me a re-morgage
of all I own)?  I contacted IDD (pg 77 Computer *** World - August) with
respect to their "PC-Pedals" but alas, though nice, they are VERY pricey
ringing in at just under $250 (US) <yikes!>  A shame as they look strudy and
even includes a 'clutch' ;-) (anyone tried these?).

Thanks......

---- Allright, while on the subject here, and since I got no feedback for
my "Pedals" post, does Thrustmaster sell the Pedal-portion of this mechanism
separately do you think?  How much etc.?  I've got a CH-Virtual Pilot which
works relatively nice in Indycar but manual shifting is out of the question
unless I get/make floor pedals to use with it I'm afraid.

---- Again, I'll ask... anyone have any suggestions regarding PC-Pedals
and good ones to get (like to use with flight-sims as well, but racing
is primary concern)?  Please, any advice would be appreciated.  Any
Toll-free numbers to places to purchase them as well (ie. TMaster direct)
or would Chips 'n Bits be the best approach (or some such place).

Thanks all
