WC or ICR?

by brop9.. » Tue, 26 Jul 1994 12:53:22

I am kind of new.  I had one previous post which asked for advice about
the pro and cons of F1 GP compared to ICR.  Someone e-mailed me a lot of
helpful information (to whom ever did, thanks), and after looking over all
the info. I decide ICR was the one to go with.  I went to the local computer
store and they where all out of ICR, but while I was their WC caught my eye.
From what I have saw and read, WC is ultra realistic racing game like
ICR.  What are the pros and cons of WC?  If, I  decide on ICR, I would
probibly get the IndyCar Circuits and the IMS expansion packs with it.  Is
this a good idea to spend the eighty or so dollars up front?  Does WC have
all the all of the F1 season tracks or will I need to by an expansion package
like ICR?  If anyone can give information comparing ICR to WC I would
really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

I bought WC first. Had a ball with it. Got ICR when it came out.
Mothballed WC. Got a Thrustmaster Steering System. Put WC back on the
disk. Played it with the T-1. Scraped it off again. Now, IMHO ICR is a
better sim. I like flying through the German woods and such, but like
ICR's challenge and flexibility more. I've raced, SCCA, and feel the
modeling is better on ICR.

I would suggest getting the basic ICR package first. The upgrades require
quite a bit of computer horsepower. A good strategy might be to get ICR,
then a T'master T-1 later. If you become hooked, well the sky's the limit.
Let's put it this way. My next step is to buy a Pentium machine. And,
maybe a hotplate to burn oil and *** on for atmosphere.

Eventually you will end up buying both these games because there is so much
argument over which one is better that no one can really say which one is. I
have always loved WC because I watched F1 all along. The graphics are good in
both but Indycar definitely edges out with its graphics because of the
advances in technology since WC was released. Playablity is tougher on Indycar
than WC. Car control makes all the difference. WC has a lot of driver aids but
Indycar has none. I would suggest WC if you are looking to learn faster. All
16 tracks from the 1991 f1 season are available. There are editors etc out for
the game which allow you to change the game and make it almost as tough as
Indycar. If you are a hard core race driver then Indycar is the way to go.
BTW, there has been a lot of talk that Microprose is coming out with WC 2
which should definitely be a better game than WC. You could wait for that one,
but I would guess that eventually you WILL end up buying both games!

I am still not clear on which of the driving thingies are supported by WC (is this
the same as F1GP?)  Does the Thrustmaster T1 work?  (well?)

Maybe. I am not about to slam WC since quite a few people do like it.
However, speaking for myself, I picked up WC first and ended up taking
it back. Something about it just didn't click for me.

Later, I traded for IndyCar. I was somewhat worried given my experience
with WC that I would not like it and that I wasted a perfectly good
Dune II in the trade. However, for me, IndyCar instantly clicked.
This WAS what I was looking for in a racing game.

A couple of factors may have played into all of this.

1) I have a DX2 66 so I had enough Horsepower for IndyCar
2) I have a Thrustmaster FCS so I had a joystick with good
   fine control and feel.

As to how difficult IndyCar is to learn, I think it is somewhat a
mixed bag. I personally have found the Ovals pretty easy. The road
courses are very fun but I have found them much more difficult
to master. This is a good thing because if I want the thrill of
victory I simply fire up something like Michigan. If I want a
challenge, I fire up a track like Long Beach.

#'s 1 and 2 are exactly what I started IndyCar Racing with, and I was hooked.
If you haven't grabbed the Formula T1 yet, I know you will!

It is not that difficult to learn.  Ideally, you'll want to be in complete
control of your car, with Manual shifting and brakes.  But novices will find
it very comfortable to learn IndyCar Racing.  You can choose Automatic
shifting and automatic brakes.  Through both of these setting you can quickly
learn the accelleration thresholds of your gear box (to some extent) and the
braking will help you learn where the brake markers are.

At least it helps keep the learning curve from being sharper than it is.

What he said... and I got the Pentium mostly likely because I was hooked on
ICR.  I know I definitely got the T1 because of it.  BTW, ICR is still in its
"current" phase.  World Circuit is working on a new version.  I'd pass on
World Circuit at this stage.  However, if you MUST have it, and you have a
CD-ROM, get the CD version.

The readme.txt doc for the 1.05 update has some info on "rudder pedals" and
how to setup in the program.  Seen some posts from people who use the T1 so
I figure it will work.

Hope it works as I plan to buy my T1 soon.  Sorry I can't give more
concrete information.

The Thrustmaster T1 works like a champ with WC (or if you are European,
F1 Grand Prix).  I highly recommend it to any racing fans.  It also works
very well with Indy Car Racing.

I've been looking at getting a Thrustmaster T1 myself.  They're asking
$299 Australian for them though.  In Australia, at least the version I bought,
is called Word Circuit.  Not sure if our versions are in sync with US,
Europe...  I've been told, however, that Thrustmaster T1 will not work with the
early versions of WC.  Apparently, if you have a version that supports dual
racing via a modem, then you have a recent enough version that will work with
Thrustmaster T1.  For any Aussies out there who may be interested, the
distributor for Thrustmaster products in Australia is:
