Can I play with a Thrustmaster FCS???

by J. Távo » Tue, 27 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I ussually play Indycar (1) with my Thrustmaster FCS and I think it's
great. There's no real advantage in a wheel except for most of us are
so used to one that we don't stand some other method. Well, I don't
drive so I don't have that problem anyway,,,

Anyway, back to the reason I'm writing this... Yesterday I tried my
FCS at GP2 and it just wasn't like Indycar. Needless to say, I crashed
at the fisrt turn at spa. But then, after messing a little with the
setup I found it easier and easier, altough FAR, FAR from perfect...

My question is: Is anybody using FCS or similar joysticks for GP2...
Doing good times????? PLease tell me what joystick setup you use...
I lock the brakes up all the time (unless I start bracking soft a good
kilometer ahead of the turn <g>). May it also requires a specific car
setup... And a great deal of practice for that matter :)

Could you help me on this? I an't got $250 to spend on a T2 and I want
to play GP2...

Can I play with a Thrustmaster FCS???

I'm using my Pro FCS in GP2 and am relatively happy.  The "binary"
breaking is the only drawback that is overtly slowing my lap times.
As far as competitive times go, I pobably wouldn't qualify for one of
the leagues.  However, I can comfortably win just about everything in
amature level.  I just started messing in the Pro level.  Right now I'm
qualifying 20-25 and finishing about 12-16 at most tracks.

Can I play with a Thrustmaster FCS???

Yep...Age-old FCS.  It works okay (I can get 1:27.xxx in Monza, which is
really the only circuit I have been able to truly master).  That is still a
far cry from the 1:21.xxx we see all the time, but I can live with it.
I use the "z" key for braking, and use auto-shift, everything else off.  I
think the key is to calibrate your joystick so that at the neutral position
(just letting go of the stick) the sim thinks it's pushed all the way
forward.  This gives me much more control steering at full speed (I just
can't get used to steering with the stick all the way forward).  Then, as I
pull back, the analog gas is lifted, without braking applied.  Another key
to remember is to tap your break (in my case "z" repeatedly as you slow
down, sort of like: pressssssss...tap..tap...tap..tap).  This prevents full
on lock up.

One more thing...in the control setups, you can get a lot more control out
of your joystick if you set the (forgot exactly: "Low speed sensitivity"?)
zones to around 70-90%.  Some people have even said 100%, though that's too
damped for me.  This allows for more mistakes in steering and acceleration.

Hope this helps.
