N2002: Severe framerate drop with new GF4 Ti4200 (eVGA)!! Any ideas why?

by pw » Thu, 15 Aug 2002 13:05:14

Hi,

Just booted up Nascar 2002 for the 1st time with my new Geforce 4
Ti4200 (128MB) card and was **idling** at Daytona with frame rates in
the 20s!  If I remember correctly, I used to get 60+ FPS when racing
using my Hercules GeForce 2 64MB GTS Pro!  This is at 1024x768x16 in
OpenGL.

I see no where to reselect what card I want the game to use, but I
reran the graphics detection utility.

Any ideas?  Other games are doing better with the new card. I think.
Just N2002 so far.

1.33 Athlon
512MB PC2100 DDR RAM
Win98SE (for N2002, but dual-boot w/ Win2000 Pro)
Direct X 8.1
29.42 Detonator Drivers
I forget what the version of the game I am running, I think it's
1.0.0.4 or something like that.

Thanks,

-pw

Possibly a driver conflict from changing vid cards.  Make sure you have
patched n2k2 then run it in opengl.  I'm guessing you have not turned off
the video sync feature(vsync) and so your not getting full speed.  Check
your video properties and defeat or uncheck or whatever those drivers need
to shut off vsync.
IF that fails...uninstall your drivers completely clean out any files that
start with nv and then re-install your drivers.  Good luck...
Your cpu is probably ok for more fps than you are reporting, fps is a
combination of many things, even bios settings can improve or kill fps.
good luck

Go to the Nvidia drivers page and download the newest drivers(1.1.82)
and
follow the installation instructions. Everything will be tweaked for you.
Just
pick performance or quality and your all set. You should be well over 100
with your setup.

When your drivers were reinstalled, all of your settings got set back to
default.

You need to make sure that VSync is off.  Check the mipmap settings.  Check
ALL the settings.

If that's not it, you might be suffering from what I call "nVidia
Constipation".  This is when drivers are installed and uninstalled and
updated and etc... so many times, that everything gets fouled. up.  In this
case, you need to clean it all out, and start with a new, fresh driver
install.

The GeForce FAQ (address not installed in brain at this time), walks you
through how to do this, and if you have Windows 98, there are utilities that
will do it.  There are no automated utilities for 2K/XP that I know of.

BTW... You probably won't be able to find the D3D Verticle Sync option (if
you are using D3D - it's there by default for OpenGL).  If this is the case,
download nvHardPage from Guru3d.com, run it, and mash ONLY the "Enable
Coolbits" button.  Then quit the utility, go back to the D3D advanced
settings, and you'll see the option there.

It's hidden by default due to Ms's funky, useless MHQL requirements.

Hey pw,
Make sure in additional properties ,opengl ,etc you have vertical
sync turned off. Major hit to your framerate and on by default. I am
running a Ti4600 XP2000 1GB DDR Ram . Gives me over 100 fps at
1200x1600x32 with opengl
and any of the more recent NVidia drivers. Steve

N2002: Severe framerate drop with new GF4 Ti4200 (eVGA)!! Any ideas why?

by pw » Fri, 16 Aug 2002 12:48:48

Hi Dave,

There was file left over from my 1410 days (nvmini2.vxd).  I deleted
it and installed the latest Omega drivers.  My frame rates went up to
the mid 30s while idling at Daytona and increased to the 50s during
racing.  I recall getting much higher frame rates with the GF2 card,
but I was too lazy to write down the numbers before installing the new
GF4 card.  Oh well.  Sim is smooth though, even at the new "low"
rates.

V-Synch is off (and was) in both OpenGL and D3D.  I have not, however,
adjusted my BIOS per Omega.

Thanks!

Just did so!

I picked quality.

Any tips?  I think I am still not getting the frame rates with the new
card that I got with my GF2.

I need to find the latest patch and install that also.  I will kick
the download off before I go to bed (only have a 24K connection <s>).

Thanks,

Well Steve, I certainly have some tweaking to do!  Am not even getting
1/2 that in Win98SE with the new Omega drivers (I have v-synch set to
"Always Off" in both OGL and D3D).  Maybe I should try installing the
game under Win2K Pro.

Thanks!

My guess would be that the NR 2002 graphics detection utility saw the
increased capabilities of your new card and turned up some things in the
rend_ogl.ini file without telling you.  One thing that is supposedly
still a big frame rate hit on GeForce cards is anisotropic filtering.
The graphics detection utility almost certainly turned that up to the
max level available (8?).  Try either turning the level down in
rend_ogl.ini or turning it off in the graphics menu and see if anything
improves.

Been so long since I have tweaked N2002 I forgot the deal about
turning down or off the anisotropic filtering level in the
rend_ogl.ini. I have that value at zero. I edited the anisotropic
filtering level in the rend_ogl.ini file to 5  and it cut my frame
rate in half. Also should have mentioned I am running Win XP pro

Have you gone from PCI to AGP (can't remember if GeForce 2 64MB GTS
Pro came in PCI)?  I went from a GF2MX PCI to a Ti4200 and had issues
which turned out to be AGP related.  If you run RivaTuner there are
some diagnostics there.  It'll tell you what AGP speed you're running
at and whether you've got sideband addressing enabled (it's on by
default with my card IIRC).  When I first installed the GF4 RivaTuner
said I was running PCI speed even though my mobo BOIS said AGP4x.
Installed the AGP drivers for my OS (Win98SE) which came on a CD
supplied with the mobo then re-installed my Detonators and things were
much better.

Hope you get up to speed soon...

YUP!  It was reset at 8, just like you said!  I haven't had time yet
to try everyone's suggestions, but I will let everyone know how things
turned out, unfortunately, the end of next week <s>. Guiding has
picked up big-time all of a sudden here in my part of SW Montana.  No
free time right now.

AGP --> AGP.

Do you have a link to RivaTuner?

Me too.  Going to reduce that filtering to zero and see what that
does.

Thanks!!
