Modem Problems...HELP!!!

by Donald L Mill » Sun, 30 Jun 1996 04:00:00

I have a USRobotics 28.8 Modem.  I am running Windows 95.  The modem is
set to COM4.  It works fine in Windows (of course), however, when I exit
Windows into DOS or just start off in DOS, NASCAR and all the rest of my
programs do not reconize the modem being there.  Microsoft Diagnostic
does not even reconize it.  So, what is my problem and how do I fix
it...

Did you buy one of the low-budget $100 Windows modems? These things only
work inside of Windows, because they use the host processor to handle some
of the higher level comm protocol.

That's correct about the USR "WinModem", unfortunately.  I haven't seen one
of them but I understand that USR is answering tech support questions on it
by saying you can't run DOS games on it.

Some of the "Windows" modems will work fine in DOS as long as you have the
plug and pray options set correctly for DOS.  That has typically meant
_disabling_ plug and play in your BIOS setup menu (boot menu).  I believe
this has worked for Supra PNP modems-
