GT3 or Gotham Racing for PC anytime soon?

by Ji » Sun, 06 Jan 2002 00:03:42

Hi,

I've been looking at videos people have made of GT3 and Gotham Racing.
All I can say is WOW.  I've been a racing sim enthusiast for quite a
while (not *** or anything), but my only platform is the PC.
Anyone know of any games that are this nice looking on the PC?  MCO
and NFS:PU are gonna look like cartoons to me after seeing these
videos.  So, what exactly is the best PC racing game, at least for
visuals?

Thanks...

Visuals.. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed has great gfx (bit
cartoony but that's what the average crowd likes best it seems) and
the graphics of RC2000 still amaze me.

I played Gothic Racing for about 1/2 an hour (about the total time I
actually owned the XBox before taking it back).

It was fun, but I would really need to see a (here's that word again)
***pit view before being interested.

GT3 would definetely be interesting, but I doubt we ever see that.  GT3 is
to PS2 as Mario is to Nintendo :)

For _visuals_ ?

Hmmm....  I'd have to say Nascar Heat.

However, NR2002 is gonna be VERY close when it comes out, and I think will
even surpass it.

I agree.  I did find the graphics of NFSPU to be 'cartoony' as well.

In NFS:PU, I agree with the "Cartoony" comment. Especially the car models..
it looks like they have terribly low polygon counts or something, and no
textures.. it's weird..

Best car models I've seen so far have been GT3.. those cars look great..

There's no***pit view in Gotham Racing?? (I've never played it). That's
stupid.. I was mad when GT3 didn't have one too...

The game would become unplayable in a***pit view.  PGR is all about STYLE and
pulling off powerslides, etc.  Very hard to visualize without the chase view.

GT3 or Gotham Racing for PC anytime soon?

by Ji » Sun, 06 Jan 2002 02:50:14

Oh, no***pit view...  ouch!  That's a deal-breaker for me.  Judging
from the way you phrased it that's a touchy subject around hear?  I
can't really race games without***pit view.  Feels to arcade-ish to
me...

While looking at the videos of GT3, I was trying to figure out just
exactly what made it seem so much more realistic.  What I finally
noticed (which I think is accurate, but the quality of the video was
so-so and I might be wrong) was that there was more background objects
- lots of posts, lights, guardrails, a basically quite a subtle but
very rich set of actual 3d objects.  Could it be that this is what I'm
noticing, as compared to basically flat surfaces with storefronts
painted on them, and the occasional mailbox or fire hydrant, that you
see in other games?

And while I have the attention of the experts here...  :)  Another
question I've wondered is, well in designing 3d games I know there are
a handful of widely used 3d core rendering engines in addition to
proprietary ones, and some "standard" world and object modelling
tools.  Could, would or should it ever be the case that
tracks/scenery/etc are designed in some kind of standard way, such
that they could eventually be shared across games?  I mean I know this
isn't the case now, but is there some technical reason it's not done?
Or do companies view this as too valuable and wish to keep it all
proprietary?  If the latter, then why should it not at least be
possible to load, say, and NFS track on any other NFS game?  It's all
just data - it should be sharable across completely different 3d
engines as long as they understand the same object model, true?  Or
not?  Are there even any modern racing sims that you design your own
tracks?

Thanks...

You will most definitely never see any of the Gran Turismo series on the
PC. That is one title that Sony banks on to sell Playstations (and it
worked on me -- GT3 is the reason I got a PS2 over an Xbox.) Project
Gotham could probably be ported rather easily (as could all Xbox games)
since the Xbox is basically a Pentium III PC to begin with, but will MS
do it? Probably not.

BTW, Gran Turismo 3 has absolutely the most amazing graphics I have EVER
seen on ANY system, console, PC or otherwise. It is an incredible game.

GT3 also lacks a***pit view (at least I never got there), and lacks
damage. In general you can probably say that console games sometimes
look a bit better, but as their CPUs are a little slower than today's
average CPU, the physics are tuned down too (which is a plus for most
console users).

So what I did was get a PS2 for on-the-couch-with-dualshock fun racing
(GT3), and do the more realistic racing on the PC.

Still, some Zelda and Mario for PC would be great. :)

And the X-Box I just stay away from since I'm afraid that Microsoft
will want to divide things up between games on the X-Box and real apps
on PC's, making you need to buy both (Microsoft is only interested in
getting customers dependent on them, not much else).

That's definitely part of it but I think that more important than the
background is the lighting effects on the cars. They actually reflect the
real environment around them rather than just a sort of scrolling
monotonous pattern that never changes. Plus the car models are simply
dead-on perfect.

Not having the through-the-windshield view truly destroys a racing game, be
it sim or arcade, for me.

I just cannot get into bumper-cam.

It is a pretty amazing use of 640X480 pixels :)

I think there is also a lot of interpolation going on, which add's to the
smoothness effect.
