NASCAR and Windows 3.11

By accident, I thought I was at the DOS prompt instead of being in Windows'
DOS shell, I found I could run NASCAR 1.2 under Windows.   The ability could
be a function of a new computer, new version of Windows or more likely the
newest version of NASCAR.

SVGA runs as fast as under DOS although I would think replays wouldn't be
as long due to reduced memory.  However, when I try switching back to Windows
with the Cntl-Esc keys and then back to NASCAR, I get the message "Not enough
available memory for the application to correctly display information.  Make
sure PIF settings are correct".  The NASCAR display is a mess.

Running NASCAR in VGA mode I get the same message.  However, the upper half of
the display is fine and lower half is fine after I refresh the screen by
escaping to the track menu and then selecting Resume.

I set up and played around with a PIF file but that doesn't help.  Locking
either XMS or EMS memory locks up the computer.

I have a DELL OptiPlex XM5100 100Mhz Pentium with 16 MB of RAM and a S3
Vision864 graphics card with 1 MB memory.  It's running Windows 3.11 with
Win32s extensions installed and a 1024x768 256 colors video driver.

I have had the same experiences....believe it's the V1.2 of Nascar that does
it.  From what I've heard from Papyrus it requires ALL of the available lower
memory you can get.  I've asked them for a recommended PIF, but really don't
think they have one as this is NOT the intention of the program.

I can believe that it works - I installed NASCAR 1.2 under OS/2
Warp, and just by accident launched it - and it ran in a 320x240
window (tiny on my huge 1280x1024 desktop) - it looked so dinky ;-)
Just run it under DOS - anyone ever try the new IBM PC-DOS 7.0?
Supposedly more free RAM and faster on the disk. Does it work?

The problem is not with available memory, but with the memory Windows
needs to store video screen display.   I don't know if you can get
around this by playing with the PIF settings for Video (Graphics-High)
etc.

I am running IBM Dos 7.0, but I haven't really noticed anything different,
yet. I might have gained a little memory, but I'm running Lantastic and I
have *always* had around 610k free, and now I think I have around 612k, so
it's nothing dramatic :)

What's so amazing about running NASCAR under OS/2?  NASCAR and ICar
both run under DPMI, which OS/2 fully supports to specification.  In fact,
if you look the DOS Settings notebook, there is a DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT slider;
this is no big deal.

Yo buddy, watch your Shift key...

I don't have NASCAR, but I have played IndyCar under Warp, no
problems at all.  I just bumped up the settings for DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT to
something around 10MB (on a 12MB system), and all was well.  As a matter
of fact, the system also has a PAS 16, and I don't seem to recall having
to load the sound drivers.  All the multimedia doodads are installed from
Warp, so this may have something to do with it.
