Processor Change for GPL??

I'm considering buying a new processor so I can
run GPL in higher resolutions.  I've currently
got:

PII-300, 66mhz fsb
Hercules Thriller 3D 8MB
64mb ram

I'd likely purchase a PII-450, 100mhz fsb since I
can get one for $275 or so, but I'm open to arguements
for the Celeron since they're $100 cheaper.  I'm
concerned about the L2 cache, though.  What kind of
improvement could I expect?  I know there are folks
out there who've made a simliar upgrade to what I'm
considering.

A new video card is not really a consideration for
me since I don't play anything other than GPL for
any length of time.  The V3 is the only thing that
will run GPL relatively easy, but the TNT2 is the
better all around card if I were to buy a new one,
but it won't do GPL without issues.  I'll just stick
with the Thriller until such time as I play something
that doesn't have Rendition support.

Also, PIII's are too expensive and I won't consider
them.  I've also heard that they're not really that
much better than the PII's anyway.

Thanks,

-Chris-

First, the P3 450 is either the same or less than the P2 450 as far as
price. All the prices that I've seen show the P3 comes in a tick under the
P2. Yes, the performance is the same when running apps that don't support
the new instructions included in the P3.

Even if the P3 is $10 more you should buy the P3. The P3 includes technology
that the P2 doesn't. So for the same speed and price why buy older
technology? Get the P3:)

I just upgraded from a p200 with a Thriller so I cant tell you how much of a
jump it would be for you. For me it was huge. I upgraded to a P3 450 and a
V3 3K(new motherboard, ram, etc). Before I couldn't run with more than 5 AI
drivers with hardly any graphics on, and that was on the edge at 25fps(BTW,
it was good in practice with 75% graphics stuff on, solid 36fps). After the
upgrade I can now run 19 AI, every single graphic option on(and I do mean
all) and the lowest fps that I've seen thus far has been 32fps(and that was
at the start of the race). Needless to say it made a big difference:) Oh
yeah, almost forgot, the online is racing 100% better.

One more note, neither the P3 or the V3 is overclocked. I just don't see the
point when its rocking the way it is.

Good luck,

Scottie

PS: In Viper I went from 28fps to a surprising 65fps:)

You might check and see if your motherboard will support the celeron chips,
they are on a 66 Mhz bus like your PII 300.
They are certainly cheaper than the PII 450's and PIII 450's. The
performance is about the same. I have a PII 450, and I know a friend with a
celeron 300A (OC'ed to 450), and all the benchmarks we've ran have been very
close.

why don't you try running your 300 at a fsb of 100MHz... thats how the
celeron 300s are overclocked. you may be able to hit 450. if you can get
that to work you can almost surely hold off until intel brings out the truly
new tech (coppermine?) instead of a warmed over PII. a PII/PIII 450 is just
not that big a step up from what you already have.

run GPL in higher resolutions.  I've currently

Something about the motherboard and the processor conspire to prevent
me from  having the 100mhz fsb available.  I only have 66, 68, & 75
available to me and don't know how to fool the motherboard into
thinking I've got a 100mhz fsb chip so that it will give me those
options.  BTW, it's a Soyo BX chipset motherboard (SY-6B?).

Check out http://www.tomshardware.com/Celeronto100.html. Don't forget to set
the multiplier as low as you can before you start. Start at 3100, try a
little higher if you feel greedy ;)
